This study was intended to examine how audiences define the features of sexual abuse reports. It used Q methodology, that is useful in exploring the audiences’ subjectivity. According to the research results, there are two types of audiences in relation to sexual abuse reports; “Pragmatic Data Seekers” and “Alternative Option Seekers.” “Pragmatic Data Seekers” are the audiences who seek evidence-based data. These audiences argue that since sexual abuse reports depend on the sensational fact descriptions, they are likely to simulate readers’ curiosity. They worry that these type of reports have the possibility to produce copycat crimes. They argue that news reports, especially sexual abuse cases, have to be delivered from the non-biased perspective. “Alternative Option Seekers” are the audiences who seek alternative options needed for preventing sexual abuses. These people criticise the current method of sexual abuse case reporting and argue that they do not provide any solutions or policies. These audiences tend to depend on the detail descriptions. They argue that news reports should state the situation, background, cause, solutions, and others. They also encourage reports to protect the victim’s privacy and personal life, for public reports can violate those issues. Summing it up, “Pragmatic Data Seekers” prefer facts while “Alternative Option Seekers” favor the truth.

본 연구는 수용자들이 성폭력 관련 뉴스를 어떻게 인식하는지를 규명하고자 하였다. 본 연구 는 수용자의 주관성을 탐색에 유용한 Q방법론을 활용하였다. 연구결과 성폭력 뉴스 수용자는 2가지 유형으로 나타났다. 즉 이들은 각각 ‘실증적인 데이터 추구’와 ‘대안제공 추구’이다. 제1유 형은 실증적인 데이터를 추구하는 뉴스 이용자들이다. 이 유형은 성폭력 뉴스가 사건의 표면만 을 다루기 때문에 수용자들의 호기심을 자극한다고 주장하였다. 이들은 호기심충족에 초점을 둔 성폭력 보도가 모방범죄를 낳을 가능성이 높다고 지적하였다. 제2유형은 대안제시를 요구하는 뉴스 이용자들이다. 이 유형은 성폭력 뉴스가 성폭력의 상황이나 원인에 대한 상세한 분석이나 처방을 제공하는데 소홀하다는 점을 지적하면서 보도의 심층적 성격을 강조하였다. 이들은 성폭 력 뉴스가 관련 당사자의 사생활 침해 등과 같은 윤리적 문제를 야기할 우려가 있다고 지적하였 다. 요약하면, 제1유형은 사실보도를 추구하는 수용자 집단인 반면, 제2유형은 진실보도를 추구 하는 수용자 집단이다.
