This article focuses on the unusual characteristics of the indigenous women’s participation in the Mexican Zapatista Army. The female zapatistas have not only occupied senior positions in the militia and in all militant institutions but also tried cultural transformations of indigenous community through the gender perspectives. This article analyses the successful interconnection between the Mexican popular feminist movement and the new indigenous women’s movement. The emergence of this new movement is the expression of a long process of organization, in which popular or rural feminists, liberation theologians and zapatista movement have been involved. This article also examines the significance and effect of the two Revolutionary Women’s Laws in 1993 and 1996. The laws were a direct attempt by the Zapatistas womens to improve their status inside indigenous communities. The Revolutionary Women’s Laws are the results of the social and cultural interaction of multiples actors who engage in the zapatist women’s movement.

본 논문의 목적은 멕시코의 사파티스타 혁명운동에서 원주민 여성의 참여가 보여준 독특한 특징을 살펴보는 데 있다. 사파티스타 군대에 참여한 원주민 여성들은 군대 하부조직은 물론 지휘부, 전투원, 민병대, 후원부대 등 모든 부문에서 광범위한 참여를 보여주었다. 본 논문은 그 이유를 멕시코의 민중적 페미니즘과 원주민 여성운동의 연대 속에서 찾고 있다. 이 연대의 특징은 사파티스타 봉기 이전에 공포된 1차 여성혁명법과 이후 작성된 2차 여성혁명법의 내용에서 잘 드러난다. 민중적 페미니즘과 원주민 여성운동의 연대는 사파티스타가 주장하는 원주민의 권리가 원주민 여성의 권리를 포함하도록 하는 데 기여했다.
