As of 2012, Korean studies program are established and operated in 845 universities of 81 countries and Korean centers in 150 universities of over 50 countries. In Korea itself, Korean studies are taught in graduate school rather than as undergraduate program, so the concentrated curriculum of Korean studies is comparatively weak in undergraduate school. This thesis is designed to stimulate the establishment of Korean studies or its department in Korean universities. The main points of the research are as follows. Firstly, the demand of Korean studies are uprising because of the increasing number of foreign sojourners, international marriage, and overseas students. Also, the dispersion of Korean culture (Haliu), the increasing number of North Korean defectors, and the decreasing number of Korean students would be taken into consideration in promoting Korean studies in undergraduate school. Secondly, after making the foundation of Korean studies in Korean universities, the globalization of Korean studies and the strategy of promoting Korean studies abroad could be put into practice. The education goal of Korean studies, its areas and contents, the development strategy of making them specializing field, and expected effects are indicated in this thesis. In conclusion, Korean studies, the department of Korean studies, and the college of Korean studies would be established as the base and center of Korean knowledge which could be a model wisdom of modern period for mankind. Korean universities should be prepared for fostering Korean experts among foreign students in order to export Korean studies.

2012년 현재 세계 81개국 845개 대학에서 한국학 프로그램이 설치∙운영되고 있으며, 세계 50여 개국 150개 대 학에도 한국학연구소가 설치∙운영되고 있다. 이에 비해 현재 국내에서 한국학과는 대학보다 대학원에 집중적 으로 설치돼 있는 가운데, 국내 대학에서 한국학과 설치∙운영은 아주 미미한 실정이다. 이와 같은 기본 문제인 식 하에 본 논문의 연구목적은 국내대학의 한국학과 설립 활성화방안을 모색하는 데에 있다. 본 연구의 목적에 따른 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국내대학의 한국학과 설치 필수요인에서는 국내의 체류외국인 증가, 결혼이민자 증가, 외국인 유학생 증가, 외국국적동포 증가, 한류(韓流)의 세계진출 확산, 북한이탈주민(탈북자)의 국내입국자 수 증가, 2018년 기준에서 국내 대학입학정원의 고교졸업자수 초과 확대 등이 규명되었다. 둘째, 국내대학의 한국학과 설치 활성화방안에서는 ‘한국학의 세계화’라는 브랜드 창출, 즉 해외의 한국학 진 출로 기반구축을 통한 ‘한국학의 세계화전략’ 구상 하에, 한국학과의 교육목표, 교육영역과 교육내용, 특성화 학과로서 발전전략, 학과 설립의 기대효과가 제시되었다. 결론적으로, “한국학의 세계화!”라는 대전략 하에 “세계예의지학 한국학!”, “세계예의지교 한국학대학!”, “세 계예의지학과 한국학과!”, “세계예의지국 대한민국!”의 세계브랜드화 선점을 위해 ‘한국학’의 선도대학, 세계 의 ‘한국학’ 메카로서 국내대학의 한국학과 설치는 반드시 활성화되어야 할 것이라고 주장하였다. “한국학의 수출을 준비해 유학을 떠나는 대한민국에서 유학을 오는 대한민국을 만들기 위한 작업”은 바로 “이 곳, 국내 대학의 한국학과”에서 시작되어야 하고, 미래한국의 꿈을 키워가는 대작업, 그것은 바로 국내대학의 한국학과 설치로부터 시작하자고 주장했다. “세계한국학의 메카, 국내대학의 한국학과!”는 결코 이룰 수 없는 꿈이 아 니라 현실이기 때문이다.
