The purpose of this study is to shed light on the research trends of studying for North Korea through 621 Doctor's thesis from first doctorate in 1970 to 2012. Researchers of studying for North Korea have been implemented faithfully in limited data after the Korean War Armistice Agreement. As time goes by studying for North Korea as a main enemy target was transformed into the object of peaceful through the Anti-communism and the Cold War and post-Cold War. Research topics and quantitative study have also diversified but the research methodology and uniqueness of the content did not improve too much. Nevertheless, doctoral dissertation of studying for North Korea is worth because the researchers spend for a long time to conduct researches about all of the North Korean information. North Korea's major trends can be identified through the analysis of doctoral dissertation of studying for North Korea: First of all, to identify the major trends on studying for North Korea before, in order to understand the socialist countries’ main features. Secondly, research methods of studying for North Korea which has been discussed mainly. In particular, which has been discussed by the totalitarianism, compared socialist, immanent, micro scopic, world-system, regional of researching methods to determine methodological implications. Thirdly after understood major trends, research methods about studying for North Korea, this paper classified as by subject, by school, by year for 621 Doctor's thesis from first doctorate in 1970 to 2012. Through such classification this paper found out the researching trend, historical feature of studying for North Korea. With regard to this study, the writer went through major events in North Korea and reconfirmed from previous studies. Finally this paper discusses the major change and research trend between the past and present for decades. Moreover make sure of the future of studying for North Korea not only field of research that has been largely (political, economic and law, foreign relations) but also a new field of study that is being attempted (refugees support, society and culture, daily life).

이 연구는 1970년대부터 2012년 현재까지 작성된 총 621편의 북한관련 박사학위 논문을 대상으로 연구 의 주요 내용과 특징, 방법론 등을 분석, 북한연구의 시대별 동향을 파악하여 미래 연구 방향을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 그 동안 북한연구는 국가안보와 현실정책의 요구에 의해 진행되었던 측면이 많아 학문의 대상 으로서 북한연구에는 한계를 보이고 있었다. 분석의 결과, 1970년대의 북한연구는 연구의 초기단계로 북 한 행정과 일상적인 법에 관련된 연구가 주를 이루었던 반면, 1980년 이후 북한연구는 주로 정치, 경제, 법, 비교 영역의 연구가 진행되어 논의의 폭이 보다 확장되었다. 또한 1990년대의 북한연구는 이전 시기에 주를 이루었던 전체주의적 접근방식에서 벗어나 내재적 접근 방법이나 미시적 연구방법 등 새로운 연구방법을 시도하여 이를 둘러싼 많은 논쟁이 진행되었다. 그리고 2000년대의 북한연구는 보다 다양한 분야에서 연구가 진행되어 이전 시기에 부족했던 사회․문화․종교․의학․ 체육․인권 등 영역에서 질적 연구가 진행되는 등 북한연구에 있어서 가장 다양한 측면에서의 시도가 이루어 졌다. 특히 이 시기의 북한연구는 남북 간 연구로 확장되어 더욱 활발히 진행되었으며, 새로운 방법론을 모 색하면서 북한 일상생활과 남북 접촉지대, 이탈주민의 노동에 관한 세부적인 연구가 진행되고 있다. 북한관련 연구는 양적, 질적 측면에서 과거에 대한 성찰과 현실극복, 그리고 미래 예측의 측면에서 괄목 할 만한 성과를 이루어 왔다. 하지만 세부적인 연구 분야에 따라 방법론이나 내용의 독창성은 아직까지 크게 개선되지 못한 점이 있는 것도 사실이다. 특히 정책중심적 편중 연구와 미시와 거시연구의 혼돈, 1차 자료이 용의 미흡 등은 북한연구의 활성화를 위해 개선해야 할 과제이다.
