This paper investigates the status and frequency of these words which are used in the modern literature. The result of this study shows that these examples of tears are basically in heavy usage. However, it can be said that some of them got out of the examples on these dictionaries. For example, we can find the heavy usage words, such as‘piteous tears(哀涙)’ and ‘heartache tears(悲嘆の涙)and tears of indignation( 悲憤の涙)’which can be categorized as‘tears with grief(悲涙)’, and‘thankful tears(感謝の涙)’that can be classified as‘moved tears(感涙)’. We can find the heavy usage of ‘chagrined tears(無念の涙)’, ‘tears of gratitude and love(恩愛の涙)’, ‘tears in sympathy(同情の涙)’, ‘tears of reminiscent(懐旧の涙)’,‘tears in deep grief(愁涙)’, which obtain citizenship in some senses. These examples, which can be figured out the human sentiment with much circumstance, can be quite seen in the modern literature. As for the rest, a few exceptional and unique examples can be seen. We can find more than one ‘tears expression’ in each sentence, which tend to explain the delicate and mixed feelings. That is, within the emotional expressions on the modern literature, we can find the special example which is not registered with ‘Japanese Vernacular Dictionary(『日本国語大辞典』)’. From this research on tears expression as phraseology, in conclusion, the expression of the modern Japanese literature has deeply abundant power. I insist that it can be labeled as a ‘literature of tears’. Last of all, I will continue to investigate the expression of tears from other perspectives in the further study.

本稿では、近代の文学作品に現われている、感情を込めた涙の表現について考察を行なった。調査の結果、󰡔分類語彙表󰡕や󰡔感情表現辞典󰡕に提示されている涙の例が基本的には多用されていたことがわかった。しかし、多用されているにもかかわらず提示されている例から漏れているものもある。例えば、比較的多用されている｢哀涙｣や｢悲嘆の涙･悲憤の涙｣は｢悲涙｣に、｢感謝の涙｣は｢感涙｣の範疇に入れてもかまわないと思われるし、｢無念の涙･恩愛の涙･同情の涙･懐旧の涙･愁涙｣のようなものも多用されていて、ある面では市民権を得ていたものといえよう。　上記の例は、近代文学において比較的多用されているものであるが、これと似たような表現の中にも非常に細かく人の心情を把握できるような表現が多かった。他に基本的な表現から外れた少数の独特な表現もかなり見られることと、一つの文に二つ以上の涙を含めることにより複雑な心情を表わしているものも少くないことも一つの特徴であった。近代文学における感情を表わす涙の表現のなかには、連体修飾の表現ではなく漢語であったにも関わらず『日本国語大辞典』に登録されていない例も見つかった。　表現論の一分野として感情を表わす涙の表現を考察してみたが、近代文学は涙の文学ともいえるぐらい豊かな表現が見られることがわかった。これからも別の観点で｢涙｣の表現について考察していきたい。
