현재 디지털미디어의 영향력은 네트워크 기반의 디지털 문화의 급성장과 함께 막대하다. 하이퍼미디어, 멀티미디어, 인터랙티브미디어 그리고 소셜 네트워크 등에서 제한적이던 콘텐츠가 미디어를 통해 급격히 확산되고 미디어 자체로서 생명력과 융통성을 발휘한다. 정보로서 대상이 본질과 더불어 정보의 이동 과정을 통해 새로운 시대의 패러다임의 특성을 스스로 지니게 되었다. 이러한 뉴미디어적 환경에서 디지털 애니메이션 또한 영화적 장르와 디지털 환경의 원형으로서 재해석이 가능하게 된다. 또한 동서양을 넘나들며 문화적 특질들이 혼종성향을 보이면서 원형 해석의 문제가 대두된다. 3D 애니메이션 쿵푸팬더가 서양의 기술과 동양의 문화가 융합된 하이브리드 현상으로서 문화적 재현의 지표가 된 점이 그 대표 예이다. 본 연구는 연구대상 쿵푸팬더에 드러난 동양적 원형의 고찰과 재현을 관찰하고 내재된 기호 속성을 분석함으로써 기술에 의해 재현된 동양 미학의 정체성에 관한 기호적 접근이다.
