It is commonly understood in most Protestant churches that the Eucharist is to be observed once or twice a year, and only sermon is the center of worship. However, we need to remember that major reformers in the Reformation period never failed to take seriously the eucharistic worship as well as the sermon-centered one. It is regrettable that sacramentality in worship today has much weakened and thus the worship excessively relied upon intellectual channel alone of human being. While the sacramental dimension in worship should be emphasized again today, it does not necessarily mean that the sacramentalism itself which long led the medieval churches to theological distortion or ecclesiastical disorder, and caused the huge ignorance in faith of the people. The point is that in the balance between the word and sacrament, the eucharistic sacramentality and their roles in worship should be properly recovered today. This effort will, at last, bring about more balanced faith and spiritual mature of the people in today’s protestant churches. However it should be done in correct recovery of the essential spirit of the eucharist combined with the respect for the contemporary social and cultural context that current protestant churches face.

오늘날 개신교회 예배 속에서 성찬은 단지 년 중 한 두 번 있는 정도의 행사가 되고 오로지 설교만이 예배의 중심인 양 이해되고 있는 것이 대체적인 현실이다. 그러나 주요 종교개혁자들은 설교의 위상 회복 못지않게 성찬의 중요성을 간과하지 않았음을 상기할 필요가 있다. 오늘날의 개신교 예배는 음성 언어 외의 전달 수단인 상징성이 크게 줄어들어서 인간의 인식 채널이 과도하게 이성적 인지 수단에 기울어 버리고 말았다는 아쉬움을 감출 수 없다. 오늘의 예배 안에서 성찬의 비중이 좀 더 강화되어야 한다는 인식의 회복은 중요하지만 그렇다고 과거의 성례전 중심주의 사고로의 회귀로 가자는 것은 아니다. 필요한 것은 성례전의 중요성을 회복하되 오늘의 상황에 맞게 적용하는 노력이 동시에 수반되어야 한다는 것이다. 결과적으로 이런 노력은 설교가 추구하는 이상에 더 부합한, 균형 잡힌 신앙과 영성의 성숙을 가져올 것이다. 이를 위해 오늘의 개신교회를 위해 과연 성찬과 설교는 어떤 관계에 있는지를 성찰하고 올바른 성찬신학의 정립을 위해 노력해야 하는데 이를 위해 다음과 같은 점들을 유념할 필요가 있다. 즉, a. 현대적 상황을 고려한 성찬 실행이 필요하다는 것이다. b. 성찬은 십자가 고난만이 아닌 부활의 승리가 경축되어야 한다는 것이다. c. 성찬은 예수 그리스도의 전체 구속사가 선포되는 주요 사건이란 점을 중시해야 한다. d. 성찬의 형식은 지역 교회들의 문화를 존중하는 변용을 잊지 말아야 한다.
