In 2007, the research team 'Reveal' tested the theory that Christians' high attendance rate in church activities would be related to spiritual growth as defined by greater love for God and others. But the results showed that high church attendance rate was not necessarily related to spiritual growth, and that personal relationship (i.e. intimacy) with Jesus Christ was more deeply connected to spiritual growth. Erikson stressed the importance of self identity in developing intimacy with others, and he also said genuine relationship with others comes as a result of a soundly constructed self-ego. To develop an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, Christians should look into their self-identity, especially spiritual identity. Safeness that comes from knowing who you are is one of the major factors that define leadership. This study focused on the issues to develop a strong spiritual identity for leadership aspects. Spiritual identity is to know God and understand who you are within God. Individuals who find the reasons for their lives in God and are recognized by God can develop their true identities and discover safeness and meaning for their lives. To develop a sound spiritual identity, Christian leaders should foster the ability to be aware of God and themselves, make decisions to pursue spiritual growth by expecting God's guidance, and build a community of trust and serve where they can share their weaknesses.

2007년도 Reveal이라는 연구팀은 교인들이 교회활동에 참석률이 높으면 영적성장, 즉 하나님과 이웃 사랑의 증가로 나타날 것이라는 가설을 가지고 연구했다. 하지만 결론은 교회활동 참석률의 증가 자 체가 영적성장과 직결되는 일은 없었고 오직 예수 그리스도와의 인격적인 친밀감의 정도에 따라서만 좌우된다는 결론이었다. 에릭슨은 친밀감 발달에 있어서 정체성의 역할을 강조하면서 타자와의 진정 한 제휴는 견고한 자기 확정의 결과임을 강조한다. 교인이 그리스도와 진정한 인격적 관계를 맺기 위 해서 중요한 것은 그리스도인 개개인이 가지고 있는 자아 정체성 내지는 신앙 정체성을 살펴볼 필요 가 있다. 정체성, 즉 내가 누구인가를 아는 것으로부터 오는 안정감은 리더십의 핵심적인 요소이기도 하다. 이 연구는 그리스도와 친밀함을 가지기 위해서 중요한 신앙 정체성의 확고함을 위해서 함께 준비되어 야 할 요소들이 무엇이 있는지 리더십 측면에서 살펴보았다. 신앙 정체성은 먼저 하나님을 알고 하나 님 안에서 나를 아는 것이다. 우리 삶의 근거가 하나님께 있음을 발견하고, 그와 같은 사랑의 관계 안 에서 하나님의 인정을 받게 된 사람은 자신의 참된 정체성을 획득하는 한편 삶의 안전과 의미를 발견 하게 된다. 신앙 정체성의 확고함을 위해서 그리스도인 리더들은 자신과 하나님을 바르게 이해하는 자기인식능력의 배양이 필요하고, 하나님의 인도하심을 더 기대하는 영적성숙을 추구하고자 하는 결 단이 필요하며, 더 나아가 자신의 연약함까지 나눌 수 있는 신뢰와 섬김의 공동체를 만들어 나가는 것 이 중요하다. 기독교인 리더들이 자기인식능력을 키워하고, 영적성숙의 중요성을 깨닫고, 연약함까지 나눌 수 있는 공동체를 만들기 위해서 노력해야 할 것이다.
