It might be said that worship and music is now more active and enthusiastic than ever before among protestant churches in Korea. Especially, the number of people interested in liturgical music has been increased recently in Korea. The core of the liturgical music in the service of worship is a hymn of praise to God. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concept about the ‘Praise’ of liturgical music and also the use of terminologies dealing with the ‘Praise’ used in current churches in Korea. There are many problems in the use of terminologies about the Praise as well as the incorrect use of the Praise in many fields of Christian activities including the service of worship and lots of research materials. Many of Church leaders do not understand precisely the meaning of concept ‘Praise’ and also they do not discriminate the name and the use of each concept dealing with the Praise related to 12 terminologies about the Praise. As a result, they misuse the concept and then make most of laymen confuse each concept. Many of Church leaders misuse the word ‘Praise’ in some aspects; first, they say that the Praise is the same as music, second, the Praise is a prayer set to music, and third, the Praise is a tool delivering messages to everyone. This researcher recommends some suggestions to solve problems described above. It is recommended that the Praise is to applaud and honor our God to be the highest. The song of praise to God is a hymn. Therefore Christians should praise him and sing for something specials such as his name, eternality, almighty, love, creation, salvation from the sin, etc. The Praise can be expressed through songs, instruments, dances, among others; as a result, the terminologies dealing with the Praise are various. The Praise is not music, The Praise is not a prayer set to music. The Praise is not a tool delivering messages to human being because the Praise is the praise itself only for God.

본 연구의 목적은 현대 교회 안에서 사용되고 있는 찬양의 개념적인 문제점과 오용되고 있는 문제점 을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 많은 문제점들이 발견되었다. 성경이 번역될 때마다 찬양용어들의 명칭이 바뀜으로 인하여 그 성경을 읽는 평신도들은 어느 것이 옳은지, 어느 것이 맞는지, 혹은 왜 바뀌었는지 혼동할 수 있다. 그리고 교회 지도자들이 예배에서나 연구 자료에서 찬양용어들을 개념 없이 잘못 사용하는 문제들 즉, 성경에서 언급된 노래를 찬양으로 인식하여 교회에서 사용되는 대부분의 노래들을 찬양으로 오해하는 것, 찬양이 곧 음악이라고 인식하 여 메시지 전달의 수단 또는 도구로 오해하는 것, 찬양은 기도와 같다고 인식하는 것, 그리고 찬양을 설교와 같다고 인식하여 찬양 속에 설교 내용을 넣는 것에 당연시 하는 것 등이 있다. 위와 같은 문제들이 교회 안에 있음에도 불구하고 이런 문제에 대하여 사람들은 무관심하거나 무시하 려는 경향이 있다. 그러므로 이러한 문제들이 계속 반복되며 답습되고 있는 현실에 본 연구자는 가능 한 한 성경을 근거하여 몇 가지 해결 방안을 제안하였다. 찬양의 본질은 삼위일체 하나님을 높이어 칭송하며 찬송함으로 그분께 영광을 돌리는 심령과 행위라 고 사려 된다. 찬양해야 할 내용은 하나님의 이름, 하나님의 속성과 성품, 하나님의 역사하심, 하나님 의 말씀 등이며 이것을 표현 혹은 선포하는 방법은 다양하다. 그 방법은 언어, 글, 노래, 악기 연주, 춤 등의 수단을 사용할 수 있으며, 표현 수단에 따라 각각의 용어 즉, 찬송, 찬미, 찬송시, 찬송가 등의 명 칭이 붙는다. 찬양은 음악으로 표현할 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있기 때문에 찬양을 음악과 동일시 할 수 없다. 음악은 찬양을 표현하는 수단(매개체)이 될 수 있으나 찬양은 사람을 위한 말씀 전달의 수 단으로 사용할 수 없다. 말씀 전달의 수단으로 사용하려면 일반 찬송가나 교회음악, 성가, 복음성가, CCM 등과 같은 노래를 사용하면 된다. 찬양은 그 자체가 하나님을 위한 찬양이기 때문에 기도나 설교 와 동일시 할 수 없다. 찬양은 하나님의 것이므로 삼위일체 하나님께만 돌려드려야 한다.
