The purpose of this study is to examine the establishment date of ‘Jipangoguryeo bi’ by the comparison of character’s composition. Geng Tiehua, a Chinese scholar, insisted it as a stele of Gwanggaetowang period. Most of Korean scholars followed Geng’s argument. Yun Yonggu and Yeo Hogu read the characters in the seventh column as “好太聖王曰” and insisted that Gwanggaetowang built it. Meanwhile, Zhang Fuyou and Sun Renjie, Chinese scholars, read them as “丁卯歲刊石”, and Sun Joosun, a Korean scholar, “丁卯年刊石”, meaning that it was built in 427, 15th year of Jangsuwang. In addition, Sun Joosun, Cho Soohyun, and I stated that it was written in the clerical script with wavy strokes and therefore built after ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’ with little wavy strokes. Kwon Inhan also insisted that the sentence was more sophisticated, compared to that of ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’, and accordingly it could be build after ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’. Its shape with a triangular head was also developed when compared to that of ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’ in natural stone.

본고는 서예학적 측면에서 <集安高句麗碑>의 글씨 분석을 통해 건비 시기를 논하기 위한 것이다. 초기에 중국의 耿鐵華는 건비 시기를 광개토왕(재위 391-412)대로 보았고, 한국 연구자들도 대부분 광개토왕대로 보아 ‘高句麗 最古碑’임을 주장했다. 특히 윤용구 와 여호규는 7행 4-8자를 ‘好太聖王曰’로 읽어 광개토왕이 건립한 비라고 말했다. 그러나 중국의 張福有와 孫仁杰, 한국의 선주선은 그것을 각각 ‘丁卯歲刊石’, ‘丁卯年刊石’으로 읽어 건비년을 427년으로 보고 장수왕이 재위 15년에 아버지 광개토왕을 위해서 건립한 비라고 주장했다. ‘丁卯’설을 뒷받침해주는 여러 가지 요소가 있다. 첫째, 書體이다. 비문은 파책이 비교적 선명한 예서로 쓰였고 해서의 필법도 보여 예서에서 해서로의 과도기적 요소를 지니고 있는데, 이로 인해 파책이 없거나 약한 古隸인 <광개토왕비> 이후에 건립된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 비의 형태다. 圭形의 碑首가 자연석인 <광개토왕비>보다 진일보되어 그 후에 세워진 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 셋째, 文體다. 비의 문체가 <광개토왕비>보다 더 세련되어 그 후에 세워진 것으로 볼 수 있다.
