This paper is intended to study the history of perfect maintenance of the Chronological Annals(實錄) for the Chosun dynasty. After the Japanese invasion(1592), the Annals enshrined in the Historical Deposit Libraries(史庫) in the Local government office must have been moved deep into the mountains. For the protection of these collections, they needed the help of the Buddhist monks. The Bureau of State Records(春秋館) dispatched officials irregularly to keep, enshrine, move, return, consult the Annals when they met a matter of great consequence, change the damaged covers, change the thread of the Annals, change the wooden boxes, and repair the library building. The practice of oiling the paper in order to keep it semi-translucent or moisture-proof goes back at least to 5-6 century in East Asia. But the papers coated with beeswax in Korea were not handed down except the Annals. The purpose of this study is to investigate when and why they coated with beeswax on the Annals published before 1592. For the first step, I analysed the records on maintaining of historical materials, buildings of the Historical Deposit Libraries and the Annals themselves. Consequently I reached the conclusion that the Annals enshrined on Jeonju Historical Deposit Library(全州史庫) were not coated with purified beeswax before 1592. These Annals were coated with purified beeswax in 1699. The reasons are ; Some of the government officials of the Bureau of State Records who compiled the Annals for King Myungjong(明宗實錄) also participated in printing of the Annals in 1606 and compiling the Annals for King Sunjo(宣祖實錄). But they did not coat the Annals with beeswax after 1600. The official who accredited to the Historical Deposit Library in Mt. Jeongjok(鼎足山史庫) had made detailed reports on the books to the King, and probably would have reported on the books coated with beeswax. But records on coating with beeswax have not been found. By contrast the Annals enshrined on Jeonju Historical Deposit Library were repaired on the whole books or small parts in 1644 and 1665. They changed the damaged cover, the thread and the wooden boxes, checked the missed volumes and pages in 1644. The following year they filed and copied the missed volumes and pages. Finally they coated with beeswax on the Annals enshrined in Jeonju Historical Deposit Library especially. The official who carried out this mission was Park Pil-Myung.

본고는 ｢朝鮮實錄｣의 染蠟에 대해 고구한 것이다. 종이에 염랍을 하면 강인하면서 투명해지고, 아울러 방습의 효과가 있으므로 실록에 염랍한 것이다. 모든 실록이 염랍된 것이 아니라 임진왜란 이전에 제 작된 오직 舊 全州史庫本만 염랍되어 있다. 종래 이에 대해 임진왜란 이전에 역대 실록 제작 당시 각각 염랍된 것으로 추정하였었다. 필자는 실록의 조선시대 관리양상에 대해 사초의 관리, 사각의 관리, 실 록의 관리로 나누어 살펴보면서, 임진왜란 이전에는 염랍하지 않았다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 임진왜란 이전에는 염랍하지 않았다는 근거는 다음과 같다. 1. ｢實錄廳儀軌｣를 참조해서 실록을 제작하였을 것이므로 실록편찬에 참여한 관원은 염랍에 대해 알고 있었을 것이다. 知事 尹承吉은 ｢明宗實錄｣ 편찬에 참여한 관원으로서 35년 이후에 완성 된 복인본과 그 다음의 ｢宣祖實錄｣ 편찬에도 참여하였지만 염랍의 전통은 계승되지 않았다는 점이 다. 선초부터 실록을 염랍했었다면 사관은 전례를 알고 있었을 것이므로 계승했을 것이다. 그러나 ｢宣祖實錄｣은 염랍되지 않았으므로 임진왜란 이전의 실록은 염랍되지 않은 것이다. 2. 정족산에 파견된 사관은 실록을 점검해서 形止案을 작성할 때 임진왜란 이전의 실록은 염랍되 었으나 복인본 이후는 염랍되지 않았다는 것을 보고했을 수가 있다. 그러나 선조 39년(1606) 복인본 의 봉안 이후 숙종 25년(1699)까지 1세기 동안 정족산 실록을 적어도 59차례나 점검하고 형지안을 작성하여 보고하였는데, 전주본은 염랍되었으므로 이후 실록도 염랍할 필요성이 있다는 것을 보고한 기록이 발견되지 않고 있다는 점이다. 3. 구 전주사고본 실록의 관리에 있어서 특이한 것은 改粧, 改絲, 改櫃, 修補, 染蠟한 점이다. 인조 22년(1644)과 현종 6년(1665)에는 전권 또는 부분적으로 수보하였고, 현종 5년(1664)에 3차례에 걸쳐 改粧, 改櫃, 改絲하였으며, 현종 6년(1665)에는 落卷과 落張을 考出하여 이듬해 적상산에서 등출해서 정족산에 봉안하였다. 이런 과정을 거쳐 마지막 단계로 숙종 25년(1699)에 염랍한 것이다. 4. 염랍할 때의 사관은 奉敎 朴弼明이었다. 朴弼明의 문집이나 기록의 전래가 확인된 것이 없어 서, 朴弼明이 염랍할 때의 과정이나 방법에 대해 자세히 알 수 없는 것이 유감이다. 원래 염랍이 되어 있던 舊 全州史庫本에만 덧칠한 것으로 보는 견해도 있지만, 그렇게 되면 열랍된 실록 전체에 염랍이 과도하게 되어 오히려 문제가 될 것이다. 또한 임진왜란, 병자호란, 이괄의 난으로 손상된 舊 全州史庫本의 보존에 많은 관심을 가지게 되어 複印本을 제작하고, 여러 차례 修復하고 修補하다가 숙종 25년(1699) 舊 全州史庫本을 특별 관리하기 위해 염랍한 것으로 추정한 다. 후일 자세한 기록이 발견되길 기대한다.
