This study looked into the formation of parties in the late Joseon dynasty and their political and academic characteristics, and analyzed the books recommended by the major scholars in each party. Under the Confucian order of that time, the recommended books of each party are not far from the range of Confucian scriptures and Neo-Confucian books from theoretical aspects. However, with considerable differences in political positions and academic background between the Noron and other parties, including the Soron, the Namin, and the Bugin, there was also a difference in books recommended by each party. However, such difference was subtle, reflecting political confrontation and alienation, and academic and local characteristics, rather than fundamental, and evidenced the influence of their political and academic position.

이 연구는 조선후기 당파의 형성과 정치적 특성과 학문적 특성에 대해 살펴보고, 각 당파에 속한 주요 인물들의 문집에 나타난 추천도서를 분석하여 평가를 내린 것이다. 당시 유교적인 질서 하에서 당파별 추천도서는 원론적인 면에서 유교경전과 성리서의 범위에 서 크게 벗어나지 않았다. 그러나 조선후기 당파들의 정치적 입장과 학문적 배경이 다른 만큼, 정국의 주도권을 장악한 보수성향의 노론과 그렇지 않은 소론, 남인, 북인의 추천도 서에는 여러 면에서 차이가 있었다. 그러나 그 차이는 근본적인 차이라기보다는 정치적 대립과 소외, 학문적, 지역적 특성들이 반영된 미세한 차이였으며, 정치적 학문적 입장이 추천도서에도 영향을 미치고 있음을 밝혔다.
