Through analyzing physical features, this study attempts to ascertain the approximate date of making the Avatamska Sutras(華嚴經) found from the inside of Amitabha statue(阿彌陀佛) of Gaeunsa(開運寺) in Seoul. As a result, it is found that all the Sutras of Gaeunsa have 17 characters per line, the same as other existing Sutras, but most of them have 26 lines per sheet. Since the Sutra was produced in scroll form with 26 lines per sheet and letters in the manuscript style, and its heading appeared in only one line, it could be estimated to be made in the 9th or 10th century. With this criteria, at least 4 volumes of the Avatamska Sutras are assumed to be made in the late Silla Dynasty, and considered as valuable as the National Treasures. The other 13 volumes are presumed to be made in the 12th century in the Goryo Dynasty.

이 연구는 서울 소재 개운사 아미타불좌상에서 수습된 복장전적 중 화엄경만을 대상으 로 그 현상 및 형태적 특징을 분석하여 대략적인 간사(刊寫)의 시기를 밝히는데 의의를 두고 있다. 그리하여 각 장의 행자수를 분석해 본 결과, 자수(字數)는 모두 17자본으로 국내전본과 일치되고 있으나, 행수(行數)의 경우 사경과 판경 모두 대부분 26행으로 나타 났다. 따라서 기본적으로 장정의 형태가 권자본인 불경의 경우에 있어서 권수제가 1행이 면서 동시에 각 장이 26행으로 구성되어 있고 자체(字體)에 사경체자가 보인다면, 대체로 9-10세기 사이에 刊寫된 자료로 판단되었다. 이러한 기준으로 판단해 볼 때 개운사 복장본 화엄경 20점 중에는 적어도 4점 이상이 신라하대에 간사되었을 가능성이 매우 높은 국보급 전적문화재가 포함되어 있으며, 그 나머지 13점도 고려 초기 12세기 이전으로 추정된다.
