The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the standard adhesiveness of the traditional Korean ink for printing. The major findings are as follows: (1) Korean traditional ink is a name by which people generically call a block of ink mass made from soots and pine pitch, and it can be classified into pine pitch ink and oil pitch ink according to the type of soot. (2) It has been known that pine pitch ink is appropriate for block printing, while oil pitch ink is appropriate for printing with movable types. (3) Only oil pitch ink, but not pine pitch ink, is currently available, and its basic adhesiveness required for making ink is 18〫 in Japan, 25〫 in China, and 22〫 in Korea. (4) The lower the adhesiveness of an ink stick is, the easier it can be rubbed and the less often it gets cracked. (5) Generally it is better to keep in some degree the thickness of traditional Korean mulberry papers, and the standard adhesiveness of ink as 22〫 -25〫 , when pine pitch ink is used for wood block printing. (6) It is strongly expected that the traditional technique of making pine pitch ink, not passed down to this generation, could be recovered and succeeded as soon as possible.

本 硏究는 印出用 松烟墨의 標準粘度에 관하여 考究한 것으로 그 主要 內容은 다음과 같다. (1) 墨은 炭粉과 阿膠를 섞어서 固體로 제조한 墨塊를 凡稱하는 것이며 炭粉의 종류에 따라 松烟墨과 油煙墨으로 나눈다. (2) 印出用 墨은 組版을 필요로 하지 않는 版印刷의 印出에는 松烟墨이 적합하며, 組 版을 필요로 하는 活字印刷의 印出에는 油煙墨이 적합한 것으로 알려져 왔다. (3) 오늘날 松烟墨은 流通되지 않고 油煙墨만 流通되고 있으며, 墨製造의 基本粘度는 日本이 18〫 이고 中國이 25〫 이며 韓國은 22〫 이다. (4) 墨의 粘度가 낮을수록 墨이 잘 갈리고 쉽게 龜裂이 가지 않는 반면에 粘度가 높을 수록 잘 갈리지 않고 쉽게 龜裂이 생기는 특징이 있다. (5) 전반적으로 松烟墨으로 各種 版을 印出할 때 印出用 傳統韓紙는 어느 정도 적절한 두께를 유지할수록 좋은 편이며 印出用 松烟墨의 標準粘度는 22〫 -25〫 가 좋은 편이다. (6) 오늘날 傳統의 松烟墨 製造法이 繼承되지 않고 있는 만큼, 하루 빨리 그 製造法이 復元되고 繼承되기를 기대하는 바이다.
