Through the analysis of historical events recorded in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮實錄) and the Diary of the Royal Secretariat, that is, Sungjongwon ilgi(承政院日記), this article is trying to study the activities of engravers in the Joseon Dynasty. Engravers are very special craftsmen who recognize the Chinese letters and are capable of carving them on various materials, including stones and woods, according to the styles of famous calligraphers. They carve letters on gravestones, astronomical charts, and the royal family documents like Okchaek(玉 冊), Jukchaek(竹冊), as well as wood blocks and tablets. The engraver’s artistic products show the workmanship of the best quality, supported with the great interest in those engravings by kings in the Joseon Dynasty.

재료가 석재이건 목재이건 刻手는 문자를 깨우치고 명필가의 예술적 筆致를 재현해야 하는 특별한 범주에 속한 장인이다. 본 연구는 그러한 관점에서 석재에 문자를 남긴 刻手 의 활동과 사실을 당시 역사서를 통해 확인하려는 작업이며, 刻手의 구분에 관한 논의의 빌미를 마련하려는 시도이다. 實錄과 ｢승정원일기｣를 중심으로 왕실 이 조성한 주요 비석 에 관한 기록을 통해, 刻手가 단순히 책판이나 편액뿐만 아니라 玉冊이나 竹冊과 같은 중요한 문서, 그리고 석재에 비문이나 천문도와 같은 글자나 그림을 새긴 사람으로서 구실 하였다는 사실을 확인하였으며, 그 일에 대한 왕의 관심만큼이나 刻字의 일에 동원된 刻 手의 솜씨 또한 남달랐던 것으로 보인다.
