In this research, investigated is the date of production of the frontispiece painting of 'Lotus Sutra' written in gold dust on indigo paper, and currently held in Tokugawa Art Museum in Japan. Since only few frontispiece painting produced in China exist, this particular frontispiece painting is highly valued. But without the prayer attached to this frontispiece painting, its date of production was not known, but only assumed, based on the analysis of its style. However, the examination of the frontispiece painting of 'Lotus Sutra' produced in 1346 and currently held in the National Palace Museum in Taiwan made it possible to identify the date of production of this Tokugawa edition. The comparison between the NPM edition and the Tokugawa edition shows that both were made on the same model, because some expressions are equally omitted from the drawing of sermon, facing right, and the subjects are completely identical on the drawing of tales, facing left, even with a little bit of differences in detail. Based on this finding, it can be assumed that the frontispiece painting of 'Lotus Sutra' in Tokugawa Art Museum was produced between 1330 and 1350.

본 논문은 日本 德川美術館 소장 元代寫經인 紺紙金字 ｢妙法蓮華經｣ 7권본 1부 寫經 變相畵의 편년 연구이다. 현존하는 중국사경의 예가 많지 않은 가운데 德川美術館本 사 경은 매우 귀중한 자료임에도 불구하고 발원문이 없어 제작연대가 밝혀지지 않았기 때문 에 양식분석을 통해 제작연대를 추정할 뿐이었다. 그러나 至正 6(1346)년에 제작된 臺灣 國立故宮博物院 소장 ｢妙法蓮華經｣ 판경변상 화의 조사를 통해 德川美術館本 사경변상화 제작연대의 실마리를 풀 수 있게 되었다. 德川美術館本 사경변상화와 故宮博物院本 판경변상화를 비교 분석해본 결과 向右 설 법도에서 수미단의 표현이 생략된 점, 向左 설화도에서 세부묘사는 약간의 차이를 보이지 만 주제 내용이 완벽하게 일치하고 있는 점 등에서 이들 변상화가 동일한 모본을 참고한 것임을 알 수 있게 되었다. 이를 통해 德川美術館本 사경변상화는 1330년에서 1350년 사이에 제작된 것으로 추정 하였다.
