This study reports the results from the actual inspection of Jikji(直指) held at the Bibliothèque Nationale in France. Four researchers examined the physical features and the general condition of printing and typesetting of Jikji. Major findings are as follows: First, from both large and small fonts used for printing Jikji, spots and stains which characterized the method of printing with metal movable types were observed. Therefore, Jikji was again confirmed as the oldest existing print with metal movable types . Second, the inner part of the entire book of Jikji was glued and folded, and the top of the book and its spine became discolored with resin. Papers on which Jikji was printed were also confirmed as Korean Hanji with paper grains that ran lengthwise inside a thin mulberry paper. Third, some letters unclearly printed in Jikji were corrected and supplemented with calligraphy. Therefore, it should be very careful to select the model shapes of characters from Jikji. Fourth, it was also observed that the condition of its printing and typesetting was not even, the density and clearness of individual letters varied, and some letters were blurred during pressing. Despite all of these weaknesses, however, it is still amazing to be able to print Jikji with metal movable types in 1377, when the general condition of printing was in the primary stage.

이 연구는 위 공동연구자 4인이 <프랑스 국립도서관> 소장의 ｢직지｣ 원본을 실제로 열람⋅조사하고, ｢직지｣의 형태 사항 및 전반적인 인쇄 상태와 조판 상태 등을 조사⋅분석 한 것이다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ｢직지｣를 인쇄한 대자(大字)와 소자(小字)들에서 금속활자인쇄의 가장 큰 특징인 반점(斑點)의 흔적 등 금속활자본의 특징들을 확인함으로써, ｢직지｣는 세계최고(世界最 古)의 금속활자인쇄본임을 재확인하였다. 둘째, ｢직지｣ 내형의 책 전체가 배접되어 있고, 책의 상단 및 서뇌(書腦)부 상단 부분에 송진(松津)의 누습으로 인한 갈변현상(褐變現狀)이 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. ｢직지｣ 가 인쇄된 바탕종이의 지질(紙質)은 얇은 닥종이에 세로발끈이 보이는 한지(韓紙)임을 확인하였다. 셋째, ｢직지｣ 원본에서 인쇄된 글자의 희미한 부분은 묵서(墨書)로 보충 또는 교정한 사례가 많이 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 ｢직지｣ 활자의 대표자(代表字)의 자형(字型)을 선정(選定)할 때에는 극히 유의(留意)해야 함을 지적(指摘)하여 둔다. 넷째, ｢직지｣의 전반적인 인쇄 및 조판의 상태는, 현재의 관점으로 보았을 때, 그 상태가 고르지 못하고 각 활 자의 인쇄에서 먹의 진하고 엷은 차이가 많았으며, 인출 때 흔들려 이중으로 찍힌 부분이 나타나는 경우 등등의 사례들도 나타나고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 1377년 당시 금속활자인쇄의 초기 미숙한 상황들을 감안한다면, 현재의 관점에서 보더라 도, ｢직지｣의 인쇄는 경이(驚異)롭다.
