Letters in general consist of an addressee's name, an addresser's name, the date, and the body, and need the etiquette suitable to the social relationship between the addressee and the addresser. In particular, letters in the Joseon period used the terms strictly classified according to such a social relationship, and many unique and sophisticated idioms and expressions which were not often used in the general literature. That was why the manuals for letters were published. The manual for letters first published was the Chinese book “Soui(書儀)”, and in our country, since the first manual was compiled by Kim Chong(金淨), the publication of Kansikryupyon(簡式類編), Hanwonch'arok(寒暄箚錄), Kandokchongyo(簡牘精 要), Kandokhoisu(簡牘會粹), Kanryehuich'an(簡禮彙簒), and Husaryujip(候謝類輯) followed in the late Joseon period.. There were several characteristics of manuals in the late Joseon period. They classified the terms used for letters according to the social position of the recipients, recorded synonyms of the terms often used in writing a letter, wrote the brief records on the earlier kings and queens, such as their death's day (Bonchokukki, 本朝國忌) in the beginning of the books, mentioned traditional names of each prefecture, reported distances from the capital to local cities, and described central and local official titles.

簡札은 보내는 사람과 받는 사람 그리고 날짜를 갖추어서, 보내는 사람과 받는 사람과 의 사회적 관계에 따라 적절한 禮法이 필요하다. 특히 간찰은 친소존비와 사회적 관계에 따라 용어가 철저하게 구별되어 있고, 또 일반 문학적인 글에 잘 쓰이지 않는 독특한 어 휘․관용적 투식 등이 매우 까다롭다. 간찰서식집이 제작되는 이유도 바로 여기에 있다. 간찰서식집은 중국의 書儀에서 기원하였으며, 우리나라는 金淨의 ｢東人例式｣을 시작으로 이후 ｢簡式類編｣ㆍ｢寒暄箚錄｣ㆍ｢簡牘精要｣ㆍ｢簡牘會粹｣ㆍ｢簡禮彙簒｣ㆍ｢候謝類 輯｣등이 조선후기에 간행되었다. 조선후기에 간행된 간찰서식집의 특징은 받는 사람의 尊卑層位에 따라 사용하는 용어 를 본문에 구별해서 표시해 놓았다는 점, 간찰에서 많이 사용되는 용어의 동의어를 예시해 놓았다는 점, 서식집의 맨 처음에 ‘本朝國忌’라는 요소가 있다는 점, 전국 각 고을의 옛 이름, 서울과 지방과의 거리, 중앙과 지방의 관직명 등이 수록되어 있다는 것이다.
