The purpose of this study is to examine the formation of large companies and small or medium sized businesses in Korea and Taiwan and review difference in economic structure between Korea and Taiwan and outcome (employment). To this end, this study covers economic growth strategies that are related to creation and growth of large companies and small or medium sized businesses in Korea and Taiwan and export and analyze the outcome through historical analysis and positivistic analysis. The result of this study revealed that creation and growth of large companies and small or medium sized businesses in Korea and Taiwan were made inevitably based on characteristics unique in political, economic and social structures that Korea and Taiwan had rather than based on economic theory before large companies and small or medium sized businesses in Korea and Taiwan acted as a driving force for export. In Taiwan, foreign direct investment is centered on small or medium sized businesses which has better effect on creating jobs and alleviating economic crisis compared with the case of Korea where foreign direct investment is centered on large companies though both countries depend on foreign direct investment for capital, technology and market needed for economic growth, which has great implications for newly industrializing countries in Asia.

본 연구는 한국과 대만에서의 대기업과 중소기업의 형성 과정을 재고(再考)하고, 이에 따른 각국의 경제구조의 차이와 성과(고용)를 재조명 것이 목적이다. 따라서 본 연구에서 사적분석 및 실증분석을 통해 한국과 대만에 있어서 대기업과 중소기업의 생성과 성장, 그리고 수출로 이어지는 경제성장 전략을 이해하고, 그 성과를 분석한다. 연구 결과 한국과 대만에서 대기업과 중소기업의 생성과 성장이 수출의 주역으로써 작용하기 까지는 경제학적 이론에 근거하여 구축되었다기보다는 한국과 대만이 가지고 있는 고유의 정치‧경제 및 사회구조가 가지는 특질 속에서 불가피하게 형성되어진 필연적인 경제구조였다. 양국이 경제발전에 필요한 자본과 기술, 그리고 시장이 외국인 직접투자에 의해 제공 되어진 경제성장이라고 하더라도, 결과적으로 보면, 외국인 직접투자가 대만처럼 중소기업 중심으로 유입될 경우 대기업 중심(한국)의 외국인 직접투자에 비해 적어도 고용 창출 및 경제위기의 완화라는 측면에서 더 유리하게 작용한다. 이는 아시아 신흥 공업국들에게 시사하는 바가 크다.
