This study aims to explain a driving force that the narrative of has been loved in terms of popularity shown in the text. For the purpose, was reconsidered in terms of readers centering on its narrative structure, device and theme implied in it. The results are organized as follows:First is familiarity. The delicately combined main stories from , of 『Sueejeon』, and of 『Keumhosinhwa』based on published in 『Taepyonghanhwagolgyejeon』. The three stories were tied to create a new story titled beyond the frames of existing stories. However, familiarity shines in these stories. All the novels have been created through combination with countless other texts, which is truly reflected in . Second, it was discovered that popularity was contained as an effective medium to solicit delicate combination of the three stories in to gain an organic structure. Such narrative devices spoken as ‘taboo·intrigue·prophetic dream’ have secured popularity as a traditional mechanism in the history of ancient literature. Also such mechanism represents contradiction in reality or Utopia that readers have dreamed of, which is another element of popularity in .
Finally, contains a traditional theme of love. It focuses on love as much as it is considered as love for love’s sake led by a couple of Sungun and Sukyoung. In addition, it is a fantastic and romantic love story although it is love acquired by breaking a taboo and devastating love leading to an extreme situation by being involved in intrigue. As well, the author of showed resistance to unreasonable reality of that time through a ‘sacrificing’ image of ‘Sukyoung’ while focusing on ordeals. It is an image of scapegoat in the system of making a woman chaste. Sukyoung who selected an extreme means of suicide against institutional contradiction of the society was the only way for women to resist against the closed society and a deviated criticism of reality. Based on the above, it was concluded that the popularity of could be achieved through development of familiar stories, active use of traditional materials and a universal theme of love in them.

본 논문은 <숙영낭자전> 서사가 예나 지금이나 여전히 사랑받을 수 있었던 원동력이 무엇인지를 텍스트에 나 타나는 ‘대중성’에서 찾고자 했다. 이는 주로 ‘독자’의 시각에서 <숙영낭자전>을 재조명해 본 것으로, 작품의 서사구조와 서사적 장치, <숙영낭자전>에 함의된 주제를 중심으로 살펴봤다. 첫째, 익숙함이다. <숙영낭자전>은 『태평한화골계전』에 수록된 <과거자잠종기처>를 기본 뼈대로 하여 < 아랑형설화>와 『수이전』의 <수삽석남>·『금오신화』의 <이생규장전> 등의 ‘환생담’ 주요 대목들을 절묘 하게 배합하고 있다. 둘째, <숙영낭자전> 속에 담긴 세 이야기의 절묘한 배합을 끌어내며, 유기적인 구조로 거듭나게 하는 매개체 로서의 서사 장치의 주효한 역할 속에 담긴 대중성을 확인할 수 있었다. 금기·음모·예시몽으로 대변되는 이들 서사 장치들은 작품 속 매개체이기에 앞서 고전문학사의 전통적 기제들로서 대중성을 확보하고 있다. 마지막으로 <숙영낭자전>이 담고 있는 전통적 주제, 바로 ‘사랑’을 담고 있다. <숙영낭자전>은 선군과 숙영 을 중심으로 한 ‘부부 중심’의 ‘애정지상주의’라고 할 만큼 사랑에 집중하고 있다. 게다가 <숙영낭자전>은 ‘금 기’를 깨고 ‘쟁취한 사랑’, ‘음모’에 휘말려 극단적 상황에까지 몰리는 ‘처절한 사랑’, ‘환생’을 통한 ‘보상받는 사 랑’까지를 담아내면서 환상적이면서 낭만적인 사랑이야기로 거듭나는 모습이다. 여기에 ‘사랑’, ‘출세’, ‘행복’ 이라는 삶의 질적 요소를 여성과 남성 모두의 시각에 공히 맞추고 있으니, 성별을 막론한 사랑을 받았음은 당 연하다. <숙영낭자전>의 대중성은 무엇보다 익숙한 스토리 전개, 전통적 소재들의 적극적 활용, 그 속에 담긴 ‘사랑’ 이라는 보편적 주제가 있었기에 가능했음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 다양한 대중성이 버물려 지면서 <숙영낭자 전>은 익숙한 듯 새로운, 비극적이면서도 낭만적인 작품으로 독자에게 다가갈 수 있었다. 그 문맥에서 읽혀지 는 익숙함과 전통성, 낭만성과 비극성이 바로 <숙영낭자전> 대중성의 근간이었던 것이다.
