The purpose of this study was to explore the current state and future direction of the athletics in elementary physical education. This study focused on the transition process and the current curriculum of physical education textbooks in elementary school in terms of athletics. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with teachers and teacher educators. First, as a result of examining the curriculum during the transition process, it was not systematic and continuous spectrum education but mosaic’s approach. Second, from the analysis of the results of examining the current textbook content, there are some athletics activities through play in the real world. But they were very limited and a lack of play and games presented. Third, in-depth interviews revealed the major problems of athletics and development plan. They were characterized as: 1) obsession for exact behaviors and rules, 2) focused on assessment and record rather than learning, 3) the lack of materials for the interest of student, 4) difficult to teach according to the textbook. Suggestions were as follows. 1) a systematic athletics syllabi should be specialized according to the grade of the student and increasing in difficulties, 2) athletic training curriculum needs to be more approachable for the student, 3) the improvement of athletic ability needs to be continuously recorded and shown to each student to instill confidence and enjoyment, and 4) students need to be actively drawn into the enjoyment of vigorous physical activity.

본 연구에서는 육상교육 측면에서 초등학교 체육과 교육과정의 변천 과정과 현행 교과서를 살펴보고 현장교사와 교사교육자를 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하여 육상교육의 방향을 모색하였다. 교육과정은 1차 교육과정부터 2009 개정 교육과정에 따른 체육과 교육과정을 대상으로 하였으며, 교과서는 2007 개정 체육과 교육과정에 의거한 교과서를 대상으로 하였다. 육상교육 현황과 문제점을 탐색하기 위한 심층면담은 초등학교 교사 3명, 교사교육자 3명을 대상으로 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교육과정 상의 변천 과정을 살펴본 결과, 학년 발달 과정에 맞춘 체계적이고 지속적인 스펙트럼 식 육상교육보다는 모자이크 식 접근을 취하고 있었다. 둘째, 현행 교과서 내용을 분석한 결과, 실생활 속 놀이를 통해 육상을 도입하고 있었으나 기능 연습과 측정 위주로 전개하고 있었고, 관련 게임이나 놀이 제시가 충분치 않았다. 셋째, 심층면담을 통해 육상교육의 현황과 문제점을 탐색한 결과 1) 정확한 동작과 규칙에 대한 집착, 2) 배움보단 평가와 기록에 치중, 3) 학생 흥미 유발을 위한 자료 부족, 4) 교육과정 및 교과서와 별개의 육상교육으로 범주화할 수 있었다. 이러한 문헌 분석과 심층면담을 토대로 육상교육이 지향해야 할 방향을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 1) 발달 단계에 맞는 체계적이고 지속적인 스펙트럼 식 육상교육이 필요하다. 2) 육상에 자연스럽게 입문할 수 있도록 육상 형 놀이가 변방에서 중심으로 올 수 있도록 해야 한다. 3) 타인과의 기록 경쟁에서 자신의 성장과 즐거움이 중심이 되는 육상교육으로의 전환이 필요하다. 4) 순서의 기다림에서 활발한 신체활동이 중심이 되는 육상수업이 되어야 한다.
