This article considers the communication matters in the process of the ‘conquest’ of America. The conquistadors sent exaggerated and distorted reports to the crown of Spain on their activities, and the wealth and the inferiority of America. Because of those reports many false beliefs were generated in Europe. On the other hand, the colonialists needed to modify the orders of crown and, in some cases, they ‘obeyed but not complied’ the institutions. Because the ‘conquest’ of America was a series of sudden crashes between absolutely strange cultures, the miscommunications were nearly inevitable. Although Spain made efforts for communications with amerindians, in many cases the spaniards’ communications to native americans were unilateral and incomplete. And some scholars have the opinion that the arguments that amerindians believed the spaniards to be gods could be misinterpretation of their expressions of courtesy and welcome. The amerindians’ identities were highly localized and alienated. Moreover the native tribes were sometimes hostile to each other and the conquistadors took advantage of their rivalry. The rebellions of Tupac Amaru II and Tupac Catari failed because, in part, of the difficulty in communication and cooperation. And the ‘indios ladinos’ o ‘curacas’ played the role of inter-mediators between colonialists and native masses. While they were in good relationship with the colonialists, the colonialism operated well, but when they sympathized with the general public, they became the leaders of rebellions.
