Since the early 1960s, the rapid industrialization of Korea has resulted in an outstanding economic growth. This change in economic development has brought about a multifaced transition embracing politics, economy, society, culture, and education. This study deals with the problem that schooling should match, either leading or lagging, changes in other social dimensions such as economic and social transition. In this context, central to this study is to examine the relationship between social and educational change focusing on the transition of school curriculum. The examination has been carried out through inquiring into North's new institutional economic theory. Especially, the concept of ‘adaptive efficiency' has been contributed to explain the link between education and economy.

한국은 1960년 초반부터 본격적인 산업화가 추진되면서 급속한 경제성장이 이루어졌으며, 정치·경제·사회·문화·교육 등 사회의 전 영역에 걸친 급속한 변화를 초래했다. 이러한 사회변동은 교육제도와 교육과정 등 교육에 있어 총체적인 변화를 불러일으켰다. 이 연구에서는 사회와 교육, 경제가 서로 긴밀하게 연결되어 있고 영향을 미치고 있으며 이러한 사회의 제 양상을 종합하여 통찰할 때만이 현상의 이면에 존재하는 본질을 파악할 수 있다는 문제의식을 바탕으로 하였다. 이에 교육현상을 정확하게 분석하기 위해서 한국의 사회변동과 교육과정 변천 간의 관련성을 North의 신제도주의 이론을 바탕으로 한‘적응적 효율성(adaptive efficiency)’개념을 통하여 설명하였다.
