Hakushu Kitahara went for trip to Sakhalin, Hokkaido after the Great Kanto Earthquake and wrote the book of travel called “Frep Trip”. In the book of travel, Ainu race was drawn, but has been criticized strictly by researchers from the situation of imperialism, the colonialism criticism. There is no room for the doubt about what white Hakusyu was carried on in the current of the times of the nationalism, and the point should be criticized enough. However, on the other hand, I think Hakusyu catch Ainu race for cultural relativism and draw it and may evaluate that he was able to stand in the situation that he is going to respect as others. It showed the possibility of the high quality cross-cultural experience that was different from racism and the colonialism in the character. Ironically, the poet Hakushu Kitahara gained valuable result in the book of travel than poetry in the poetic representation for the Ainu race.

北原白秋は関東大震災後に樺太・北海道旅行に行き、『フレップ・トリップ』という紀行文を書いた。その紀行文のなかで、アイヌ民族が描かれるが、近年の研究では帝国主義・植民地主義批判の立場から厳しく批判されてきた。当時、白秋が国家主義の時流に乗っていたことについては疑いの余地はなく、その点は十分批判されるべきである。しかし一方で、『フレップ・トリップ』のアイヌ表象の一部はアイヌ民族を文化相対主義的に捉えて描き出し、他者として尊重しようとする立場に立ち得ており、評価してもよいのではないだろうか。それは、人種主義や植民地主義とは性格の異なる良質の異文化体験の可能性を示していた。皮肉なことに、詩人白秋はアイヌ民族に対する詩的表象においては、詩よりも紀行文の方で価値ある成果を収めたのである。
