There are many mural paintings including mural paintings of takamatsu tumulus in Japan and various measures have been studied to prevent the deterioration and conserve the mural paintings. This paper describes conservation history and management status of some major paintings. Conservation of horyuji kondo wall painting is thought to be the beginning of wall painting conservation. For this conservation, synthetic resins was used for the first time, typical form of investigative committee of conservation was made and it influenced enactment of the Cultural Properties Protection Law. After fire accident in horyuji condo in 1949, Japan government established investigative committee of conservation and the burnt painting was cured by injecting urea resin and acrylic resin and transfered to store in the Daihozoin (Great Treasure Gallery) of Horyu-ji Temple. Also, there are many ‘decorated tumulus’, which means the tombs decorated with mural paintings or incising, especially concerntrated in Kyushu region. One of them is mural painting of Takamatsuzuka tumulus. After discovered, Japan Cultural Affairs Agency had researches and decided to conserve paintings in situ. But since 1980, several problems including fungi had occurred, the conservation committee for Takamatsuzuka tumulus developed protective measures against biological problems of the tumulus. The committee studied various protective measures but finally concluded in 2005 that it was difficult to conserve mural paintings in situ and recommended removing the stones for the restoration of the mural paintings. Following this decision, the stone chamber was dismantled and the mural paintings were moved to a restoration facility in 2007. Kitora tumulus, located in the south of Takamatsuzuka tumulus, was discovered and researched in 1983. the mural paintings on plaster had become partly detached from the stone support. Thus it was decided to relocate the paintings in 2004 and relocation was undertaken by attaching HPC and rayon papers to surface of paintings. Now the paintings are conserved in a controlled environment. And Torazuka tumulus, one of national treasure in Japan, is decorated by depicting in tuff with Iron oxide and when it was discovered, roots of plant penetrated through cracks in surface of ceiling stone. For conservation of the paintings, opening of the tumulus was closed with blowing styrole with clay blocks accumulated around the opening. After the measure, environmental check had been conducted regularly. Now the tumulus is exhibited two times a year considering environment inside the tombs. Japan government established ‘Office for Protection of Tumuli and Murals’ in 2007 for mural paintings’ management nationally. So we should benchmark japan’s case and make up TF team and care for our important cultural properties professionally and efficiently.
