Korea's Seowon or Confucian Shrines and Academies preserve Joseon Neo-Confucianism spirit, serving as education institutions, and offering a cultural landscape that encompasses the beauty of ecological architecture involving a peaceful coexistence of nature and humans. Recently, the world heritage value of Seowon is being highlighted again, and thus the Committee for Listing Korean Seown as World Cultural Heritage is pushing to register Joseon Seown as UNESCO World Heritage. This study examined the world heritage value of the nine UNESCO candidate Seowon from a landscape perspective rather than from an architectural perspective. Based on onsite investigations, Seowon landscape damage problems were determined, and improvement measures for preservation and management thereof were proposed. The findings of this study are outlined as follows. First, based on not only Seowon structures's physical boundaries, but also on cultural heritage areas, cultural heritages should be re-designated in the context of Seowon's places and locations, and Seowon's landscape scope and targets to be preserved and managed should be distinctively defined. Second, Seowon should be protected from excessive development projects including the construction of facilities in the surrounding areas so as to secure visibility and open spaces between major surrounding landscape elements and the development areas. Third, based on diverse data, as well as on the verification of the original landscapes inside and outside Seowon premises, Seowon should be improved and recovered. Also, detailed guidelines for construction and landscaping should be prepared to create not only surrounding landscapes of Seowon but also overall historical and cultural landscapes.

우리나라 서원은 조선시대 성리학이라는 시대정신을 품고 있는 교육적 장소이자, 자연과 인간이 평화롭게 공존하는 생태건축의 아름다움이 담겨져 있는 문화경관이다. 최근 서원의 세계유산적 가치가 재조명되면서, ‘한국서원 세계문화유산등재 추진준비위원회’는 조선시대 서원을 세계적으로 인정받기 위해 서원을 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재를 추진 하고 있다. 본 연구는 세계문화유산 등재 추진 중에 있는 전국의 9개 서원을 대상으로 세계유산 적 가치를 건축 보다는 외부공간과 경관적 측면에서 새롭게 조망하여 보았다. 현장조사를 통해서는 서원의 경관훼손의 문제점을 파악하고 보존ㆍ관리적 측면에서 개선방안을 제시 하고자 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같이 정리될 수 있다. 첫째, 단순히 건축물에 한정된 물리적 경계가 아닌 서원의 장소적ㆍ입지적 맥락을 고 려한 합리적인 문화재지정구역의 재설정을 통해 보존ㆍ관리해야할 서원의 경관범위와 대 상을 명확히 해야 한다. 둘째, 서원 주변지역의 과도한 개발과 편의를 위한 시설들의 무분 별한 설치로부터 서원과 외부의 주요경관요소 사이에 상호ㆍ시각적 개방성과 가시성을 확 보하여 보존해야 한다. 셋째, 다양한 자료를 바탕으로 서원경ㆍ내외 원형경관의 고증을 통 해 향후 정비ㆍ복원 계획시 우선적으로 반영해야 하며, 추가적으로 건축ㆍ조경에 대한 세부 지침을 마련하여 서원의 주변경관뿐만 아니라 전체적인 역사문화경관이 조성되도록 유도 해야 한다.
