This study investigated the characteristics of news coverage in Korean and Japanese newspapers to explore how they covered their neighboring counterpart each other and what impact will be brought in establishing the national image of each two countries. As Korean newspapers, three newspapers, Dong-a,Han-kook, Kyung-hyang newspapers were selected, while for Japanese, Yomiuri and Asahi were chosen for investigation. As a result, this study found that 'news stories' were the most in both Korean and Japanese newspapers. 'columns/opinions' were the second. The most popular genre was 'opinion', and 'comprehensive stories' were the second in Korean newspapers. Korean newspapers covered Japan with neutral stance very often, but negative stories were more than positive ones regardless of the viewpoint of each newspaper. This fact would be likely to result from the current series of negative attitudes of Japan in dealing history and spillover of radioactivity due to nuclear power plants. However this study suggested rational as well as investigative stories should be more necessary than opinions based on emotions in order to improve a mutual relationship between two countries. On the other hand, stories regarding politics and international affairs were majority in Japanese newspapers. Similar to Korean newspapers neutral stories were the most in covering Korea. However positive stories were slightly more than negative ones in Japanese newspapers. This result means still probabilities will be in fostering a favorable as well as future-oriented relationship between two countries, especially because attitude and frames of the press and media greatly affect people's image-making about foreign countries.

본 연구는 한국과 일본 신문에 게재된 상대국 관련 보도 분석을 통해 한일보도의 특징을 밝혀내는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. 이를 통해 일차적으로 한국과 일본 언론이 상대국을 취급하는데나타난 보도특징은 무 엇이고, 이 같은 보도의 특성과 태도는 장기적으로 양국에 대해서 어떤이미지나 인상을 주고 있는가를 밝히고자 한다. 연구결과 한국 신문은 일본을 취급하는 방법을볼 때 “어느 쪽도 아니다”라는 가치중립 적인 기사가 가장 많았지만 “부정적 이미지를 준다”는기사가 “긍정적 이미지를 준다”는 기사보다 많은 것으로 나타났다. 한국 신문은 진보와 보수를막론하고 특히 칼럼/논단과 오피니언/인물 기사를 통해 최 근 일어나고 있는 일련의 사태에 대해일본에 대해 비판적인 성격의 기사를 일관되게 많이 보도하고 있 는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 일본관련 뉴스발생지는 한국이 가장 많았고, 상대국에 대한 비중은 일본은 참 고 정도해서 작성된기사가 가장 많았다. 한편 일본 언론에서의 한국은 역사문제를 포함한 정치･외교적인 문제 이외는 다른 장르를크게 다루고 있지 않았다. 또한 일본 신문은 자국과의 관련성보다는 남북한 관계에 더욱 관심을기울이고 있는 것으 로 나타났다. 그런데 일본 신문이 한국 관련 기사를 어떻게 취급하고 있는지에 대해 살펴본 결과는 중립 적인 보도가 약 절반을 차지하고 있어 향후 언론의 보도형태에 따라서 한일관계 개선의 여지가 있음을 시사한다.
