This term of silhouette has set up and used in the study of the art, philosophy and humanities. The form of silhouette in the art has been used as shadow play. poster design, animation and installation art. A research has been launched combining the literature review and investigations on case studies. To clarify the concept of silhouette, a wide range of historical literature review were conducted and the additional research has been performed on the case studies of the children books in terms of silhouette illustration. The report is to propose a meaning and potential use of the silhouette illustration on the picture book. This study analyses six picture books which are , , , , , and that are paticularly well-expressed in terms of silhouette illustration in pictures. As a result, it can be seen that there are significant findings in those books that are uses silhouette illustration. The silhouette illustration can give children fantasy like surrealism and have formative and artistic characteristic with tracing paper in the book, . At last the silhouette illustration in children book is shown as tool of imagination for children

본 연구는 실루엣 일러스트레이션을 표현기법으로 적용한 어린이 그림책에서 실루엣 표현이 가지는 의미를 제시하는데 있다. 예술에서 실루엣은 그림자극과 같은 놀이, 포스터 디자인, 설치작품을 통해서 활용되고 있 음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 흐름 속에서 어린이 그림책에 나타난 실루엣 일러스트레이션의 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 실루엣의 개념 및 특성에 대한 문헌적 고찰을 통해 의미를 명확히 한다. 둘째 로 실루엣 일러스트레이션이 적용된 어린이 그림책의 다양한 사례를 통해서 의미를 분석 후 도출하였다. 그림 책 사례는 어린이 그림책에서 실루엣 일러스트레이션이 두드러지게 표현된 대표적인 작품으로 이수지의 <그 림자 놀이>, 나탈리 디에테를레의 <할머니의 요술모자>, 브루노 무나리(Bruno Munari)의 <까만 밤에>, <안 개 속의 밀라노>, 이보나 흐미엘레프스카의 <문제가 생겼어요>, <학교 가는 길>을 선정하여 분석하였다. 1960년대의 브루노 무나리 그림책부터 현재까지 대표적인 실루엣 표현기법을 사용한 그림책을 살펴본 결과 실루엣 일러스트레이션은 초현실주의와 같은 환상을 표현하는데 효과적이며 부르노 무나리의 작품에서 실루 엣 일러스트레이션은 트레싱지라는 소재를 사용하여 겹쳐진 실루엣 형태는 3차원의 조형성을 예술적으로 표 현하고 있다. 마지막으로 실루엣의 모호한 형태로 인하여 보는 이의 시각에 따라 다양한 형태로 보여줄 수 있 어 상상력을 발현시키는데 충분한 지각형태로 사용될 수 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.
