This study will look into the meaning and the characteristic theme in Yeon Soo Shim's literature(novels, stray notes and essays) who moved to China via Russia in order to escape from the poor conditions in mother land under the Japanese imperialism. We can't find out any discontent or resistance in his works. His works represent the strong will for life as a poor Korean peasant in China. We can classify the characteristic theme in Yeon Soo Shim's works into three meanings as follows;First, settler's consciousness of Yeon Soo Shim's family was described to the literary style of local customs in China, cultivating wild land and agriculture. Partly, protagonists in his novelette were concentrated in representing families and neighbors as peasants. Second, The peasant's consciousness in stray notes(1) ｢Nongingicho｣ was described in the life of poor peasant. The real conditions of peasants was described as going with the cycle of season. Furthermore, words, which the son of peasant wants to tell, were the agriculture method of the relationship between human and nature, and the stray notes(2) ｢Gikupsaenghwalmantae｣,describing several jobs with simple but detailed sentences, is encouraging that we have to be faithful to our duty. According to this, he gives the meaning that agriculture is the root of life. Third, in his essays and novelettes, the enlightening consciousness of returning to farm is encouraging the practical farmer who manage the environment. The novelty of peasant and devoted farmers life that develop his and three generation's life were described in his works. It means a kind of social movement that enlightens farmers. Especially, novelettes ｢sukma｣, ｢seyou｣,｢nonghwang｣ were affected by Kwang Soo Lee's ｢moojung｣ and ｢huk｣, Hoon Shim's ｢sangloksoo｣. I think that we have to study Yeon Soo Shim's works widely and systematically in the future. With regard this, I have several tasks to understand the characteristic of history of settlers and his family with studying the consciousness of a farmer, enlightening consciousness of returning to farm in his literary theme.

일제강점기에 궁핍과 탄압을 피해 러시아를 거쳐 중국으로 건너간 재중조선인 심연수의단편 소설, 만필, 수필 에 나타난 주제적 특성을 단면적으로 고찰하고 그것이 지닌 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 그의 작품 속에는 투 정이나 투쟁은 찾아 볼 수가 없다. 가난한 재중조선인의황무지 개간과 수도영농手稻營農으로써의 적극적인 삶의 의지를 잔잔하게 그린 작품들이다. 심연수의 단편소설, 만필, 수필에 나타난 주제적 특성을 정리하면 다음과 같은 세 가지 의미를지니고 있다. 첫째, 심연수의 가족적 삶의 개척의식은 중국의 풍습과 관습, 향토색이 짙은 용정과 신경그리고 황무지 개간, 근농법과 수도영농 등의 토속적인 문체 표현으로 드러난다. 한편 단편소설 등의 주인공들은 흙에서 살다가 흙 과 더불어 인생을 마치는 가족들과 이웃들로 부각시키는 데 역점을 두고 있다. 둘째, 만필(1) <농인기초農人記抄>에 나타나는 농민의식의 정립은 가난한 소작 농민의인간상을 주제로 한다. 만필은 농촌의 소작 농민들의 현실적인 삶의 모습을 계절의 순환에 순응하도록 술회하고 있다. 또 농민의 아 들로서 하고 싶은 말은 자연과 인간 상호관계의 농사법과 만필(2) <職業生活萬態>는 여러 직업군을 간결한 문장으로 상세하고 생동감 있게 드러내어 각자가 맡은 일에 충실할 것을 권장하고 있다. 이를 통하여 농사는 천하지대본의 긍정적의미를 부여한다. 셋째, 단편소설에 나타나는 계몽의식은 현실 적응에 적극적으로 대처하는 실천적 농민으로행동하고자 한다. 산문 장르에 대한 분석을 통해 심연수 문학세계의 근저를 이루는 현실인식,구체적으로는 농민의식과 계몽의 식을 도출해 본다. 농촌에서 농부로 삼대 가족이나 개인이 시대상황을 극복하며 적극적으로 삶의 터전을 일구 어 내는 참신성과 헌신적인 농민상을 엿 볼수가 있다. 그들은 농민 속으로 파고 들어가 그들을 교육 계몽하거 나 농촌을 부흥시키고자 하는 일종의 사회운동의 의미를 띠고 있다. 특히 작품 단편소설 <石馬>, <書留>, < 農鄕>은이광수의 <無情>과 <흙>, 심훈의 <상록수>의 영향을 받은 것으로 짐작된다. 그런 의미에서 주제적 특성에서 나타나는 개척의식, 농민의식, 계몽적 귀농의식을 통하여이주민의 새로운 이 민사, 가족사의 특성을 밝히는 일이 앞으로 필자의 과제로서 남아 있다.
