This study reviews Ham Daehun's full-length novel to examine the author's desire expressed through the land of Manchuria as well as in his perception on the land established by his travel experience during the late Japanese colonial era. While Ham's travel essay has been frequently referenced as the source to examine perceptions of Chosun authors during Japanese colonial period, study on has been rare even though it directly reveals experience of the author himself in the novel. The significance of this novel lies in the fact that the novel reveals hints of the author's inner struggle on his desire expressed in Manchuria and on how Chosun people live in Manchuria, which are not disclosed in the travel essay. Distinctive characteristic of Ham's is that it portrays both a desire of Chosun people in Manchuria to be accepted as ‘citizens’of ‘Manchuria’ and a desire to become ‘Japanese’. These two directions which were also suggested as the alternative lives of Chosun people in Manchuria were overlapped in the novel rather than choices for selecting either. To be accepted as ‘a citizen’ of ‘Manchuria’, contribution to Manchurian development and rice farming techniques of Chosun people were established as the base and Asian mentality was stressed for assimilation to ‘Japanese’. However being both ‘a citizen’ of ‘Manchuria’ and ‘a subject’ of ‘Japan’at the same time is clearly contradictory; therefore Ham's desire and seeking of double identity cannot escape from self-contradiction. Expression of contradicted desire is closely linked to his perception on Manchuria which was formed through learning from his travel to Manchuria during which he visited Manchuria as a reporter and listened only to the official classes.

이 글은 일제말기 만주를 여행한 경험이 있는 함대훈의 만주에 대한 인식과 만주공간을통해 표출되는 작가의 욕망을 그의 장편소설 <북풍의 정열>을 중심으로 살펴보는 데 목적을두었다. 그동안 함대훈의 기행문 <남북 만주편답기>가 식민지 조선 작가들의 만주 인식을 고찰하는 근거자료로써 종종 언급되어 온데 비해 작가의 만주 체험을 직접적으로 소설화해낸<북풍의 정열>에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 이 소설은 기행문 에 드러나 있지 않은, 즉 만주 공간을 통해 표출되는 작가의 욕망과 재만조선인들의 존재 방법에 대한 작가적 고민의 흔적을 드러내고 있다는 점에서 중요한 가치를 지닌다. 함대훈의 <북풍의 정열>이 독특한 점은 재만조선인이 ‘만주국’의 ‘국민’으로서 인정받으려는 욕망과 ‘일본인’ 이 되려는 욕망을 하나의 작품 속에 동시에 담아내고 있다는 데 있다. 재만조선인들의 삶의 대안으로 제시된 것이기도 한 이 두 가지 길은 그 중 어느 하나를 선택할수 있는 문제로 나타나는 것이 아니라 소설 속에서 중 첩되어 나타난다. ‘만주국’의 ‘국민’으로인정받기 위해 조선인의 만주 개척의 공로와 수전경작기술이 근거로 마련되고, ‘일본인’과의동일화를 획득하기 위해 동양정신이 강조된다. 그러나 ‘만주국’의 ‘국민’이면서 ‘일본’의 ‘신민’이 된다는 것 자체가 엄연히 모순되는 것이며 따라서 두 개의 정체성을 동시적으로 추구한함대훈의 욕 망 또한 자기모순에 빠질 수밖에 없다. 이러한 모순된 욕망의 표출은 편집기자의신분으로 만주를 방문하고 관 리층의 언술에만 귀를 기울인 함대훈의 여행 체험의 방식과 이를 바탕으로 학습의 경로를 통해 형성된 그의 만주 인식과 밀접히 연관되어 있는 것이다.
