The most important experience in Lee, Byungju’s Literature is the Experience of student soldier that he had experienced in 1944-1945. Lee,Byungju had taken this experience from his first novel to his last work. Lee, Byungju’s Literature that had taken problem of Student Soldier has the limit of palilalia of characters, experiences, thoughts. The most considerable cause is the pressure of deny-consciousness which could not accept the act of cooperation in japanese aggressive war. The most considerable cause that we can not identify the sense of others to china is also the pressure of this deny-consciousness. Under the pressure of this deny-consciousness, Byungju had dig into the consciousness of student soldier, so had cultivated the unique literature. The sense of Lee, Byungju that see the problem of student soldier is divided into two those of not- agrement and self-denial. The former is variated into the consciousness of antiwar and the consciousness of heretic. The other is variated into the consciousness of self punishment and self sympathy.

학병 문제를 다룬 이병주 문학은 전체적으로 보아 비슷한 유형의 인물, 체험, 사유의 동어반복에서 크게 벗어 나지 못하였다는 한계를 보이는데, 그 가장 큰 이유는 학병에 지원하여 일본의 침략전쟁에 협력한 사실을 용 납할 수 없다는 부정의식이 작가를 짓눌렸기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 작가의 학병 체험과 관련된 문학에서 중국과 중국인에 대한 타자의식은 거의 찾을 수 없는데 그 요인의 하나는 앞에서 말한 부정의식에 압도되었기 때문이다. 물론 중국과중국인에 대한 타자 의식의 결여는 다른 요인에서 비롯된 것이기도 하다. 보편적 인간 형에 대한 작가의 관심이 구체적인 시공간에 존재하는 개별자에 대한 관심을 가로막은 것을 그 주요한 요인의 하나로 들 수 있기 때문이다. 이 같은 부정의식에 짓눌려 동어반복을 거듭하는 가운데서도 이병주는 학병 체험자의 의식을 깊이 파고들어 우리 문학사에서는 달리 찾을 수 없는 개성적인 문학을 건설하였다. 학병 문제를 바라보는 작가의 의식은 크게 일본이 내세운 전쟁 명분에 동의하지 않았다는의식과 자기부정의 의식으로 나눌 수 있다. 앞의 것은 다시 반전 의식과 이단자 의식으로 변주되고, 뒤의 것은 자기 처벌의 의식, 자기 연민의 의식으로 변주된다.
