This study covers the issue of transience and permanence. Transience stands out as one of key concepts while describing a theory of dependent origination with twelve causes which is emphasized at the initial level of early buddhism. The theory of dependent origination refers to transience, or transitoriness, of what results from relations or comes with conditions. In The Diamond Sutra and The Nirvana Sutra, Shakyamuni cautions that understanding transience from the idea of impermanence, one of three marks of existence, as “anything material and spiritual diminishes and disappears” has risk of misguiding the unawakened. Thus, at the beginning, impermanence, unself-hood, and dis-ease need to be learned. However, after people do good deeds and reach the level of “great vehicle”, permanence, self-hood, and delight need be learned. Shakyamuni explains that teachings, Buddha nature, and potential for Buddha do not disappear and exist permanently and consistently. They are attained from countless good deeds and wisdoms and thus derive from the four limitless minds, six perfections, ten powers of the Buddha, and the four fearless guarantees. Therefore, all sentient beings have this potential of being the Buddha.

이 논문은 불교의 무상성과 상주성의 문제를 다루고자 한다. 불교 삼법인에는 제행무상이라는 것이 있다. 이 무상성은 근본불교 초기단계에서 강조되는 12지연기의 연기생법을 설명하는 과정에 서 부각된다. 연기생법은 인연에 의해 존재하게 되는 것이나 무릇 조건에 의해서 생긴 것은 모두 무상하다는 것을 의미한다. 석존은 소품 반야바라밀경이나 열반경에서 제행무상의 무상성에 대해, “무상성을 물질적인 존재 나 정신적인 존재나 모든 것은 멸하여 사라지는 것이다”라는 의미로 이해한다면, 이는 거짓 반야 바라밀인 것으로 아직 깨우치지 못한 사람을 과오에 떨어뜨릴 위험이 있다고 경고한다. 그래서 처 음에는 무상․무아․고통을 가르치지만 사람들이 공덕을 갖추어 대승의 단계에 이르면 상․아․락 을 가르쳐야 한다는 것이다. 석존은 법, 불성, 여래와 같은 것은 소멸하지 않는 것, 상주불변한 것으로 설시한다. 이들은 헤아 릴 수 없는 공덕과 지혜로부터 생기는 것으로, 자비희사와 같은 사무량심, 육바라밀, 십력, 사무소 외와 같은 것들로부터 온다. 모든 중생은 이런 여래가 될 수 있는 종자인 여래장을 지닌다.
