This essay aims at investigating what is the real affairs Korean evidential historians have done and showing they are satisfied in imperialistic design. Primarily, I account for comparing their arguments and the historical theories of the Western in reference to scientific character and objectivity of history Korean evidential historians presented. Japanese historians utilized history as the skill of colonial rule. They influenced Korean evidential historians who focused on strict criticism to historical sources with evidential methodology. The scientific character proposed by them is poor because they did not experience a historical controversy for the sake of scientific character of history. In a problem of objectivity of history they focused on an objective posture of historians and accepted a possibility of recognizing objective historical facts, as they regarded their methodology as pure history. However, this kind of argument are not conceded in view of the historical theories of the Western. It is revealed that Korean evidential historians formed their own dogmatism self-contradictorily. Nextly, in the historical narratives, Korean evidential historians stayed a simple interpretation of words and phrases and a confirmation of fragmentary fact by clinging to their evidential methodology. This is compared with Ranke’s achievement that he got a nickname ‘a prince of historical narrative’ by writing histories of European nations. Like this way, as not tried to do historical narratives, but identified individual facts, it is turned out that the Korean evidential history have faults. In a generalization of history, Korean evidential historians did not describe realities of era and society thorough historical generalization. Their evidential studies which do not suggest principles of historical narrative is flawed. In Croce’s words, it is just ‘died story’, ‘chronicle as not history’. And in relation with current viewpoint to history, they reject sternly that historians interfere current viewpoint to history. This fully run counter to a viewpoint of western historical theories that all history is modern history. Therefore their research results fail to delineate the historical realities by writing the extended chronicle. Korean evidential historians, who take the lead in the Korean studies, secure an unique position with only their own evidential way. Investigating their studies make show that they do not get out of imperialistic design. Therefore, it is needed to seek to study alternative research of history to reach the historical true realities.

한국 사학을 주도하는 실증사학자들의 실상을 살펴보고 그것이 식민주의적 기획 안에 안주하는 것이었음을 밝히는 것이 이글의 목적이다. 이를 위해서 일차적으로 한국 실증사학자들이 제기한 과학성과 객관성의 문제에 관련하여 그들이 주장한 주장과 서양의 사학이론을 비교하여 설명한다. 실증사학자들은 실증의 방법을 가지고 사료에 대한 엄정한 비판에 초점이 맞추었다. 역사를 식민통치술로 이용한 일본 사학자들의 영향을 받은 그들의 과학성은 서양의 역사논쟁을 거치지 않은 허술한 것이었다. 객관 성 문제에 관련하여서도 실증사학자들은 주로 역사가의 객관적 자세에 초점을 맞추었고 실증사학으로 순수사학으로 간주하고 객관적 사실 인식이 가능하다고 보았다. 그 러나 이런 주장은 서양의 사학이론들에 비추어 볼 때 인정되지 않는 것임을 밝혔다. 이로써 한국의 실증사학자들은 자기 성과를 객관적이라 생각하며 교조주의를 형성하 였다. 다음으로 역사서술 면에 볼 때 실증사학자들은 방법론에만 집착한 채 단순한 자구해석과 단편적 사실 확인에 그쳤다. 이것은 유럽 주요 민족과 국가의 역사를 저술하여 ‘ 역사 서술의 왕자’란 별칭을 얻은 것과 대비된다. 이처럼 개별 사실들만 확인한 채 역사서술을 제대로 시도하지 못한 한국의 실증사학은 온전한 역사연구임을 뒷받침해 준다. 일반화 문제에서도 실증사학자들은 일반화를 시도하여 시대와 사회의 면모를 기술하지 못했다. 역사 서술의 원칙도 제시하지 못하는 그들의 실증적 연구는 결함이 있다. 이것은 크로체의 말로 하자면 ‘죽은 이야기’, ‘역사가 아닌 연대기’에 불과한 것이다. 역사에 대한 현재적 관점에 대해서 실증사학자들은 역사에 현재적 관점을 개입 시키는 것을 단호히 거부한다. 이는 모든 역사는 현대사라는 서양의 사학이론의 입장과는 정면 배치되는 것이다. 이로써 보건대 실증사학자들의 연구성과들은 확장된 연 대기에 그침으로써 진정한 역사상을 그려내는데 실패하였다. 단순한 실증 하나로 한국 사학을 주도하는 실증사학자들은 제3의 길을 주장하며 독보적인 위상을 확보하였다. 그 내용을 자세히 보면 일제의 식민주의 기획에서 벗어나 지 못했다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 역사의 진실에 도달하려는 대안적 역사연구를 모색해야 하는 필요성에 도달한다.
