This Study analyzed Dabohashi Giyoshi’ 『Study on the Modern Japanese-Korean Relations』 and it’s character of Japanese Colonial Historiography. Dabohashi was professor of Gyeongseong Imperial University and he worked at Joseonsa-Pyeonsuhoe(朝鮮史編修會). He was overestimated in right of historian based on positivism and conscientious scholar from a junior scholar of Japanese and Korean. But he was a scholar representative of a national school academism from the standpoint of modern history. For example, First, Colonial Japanese government supports Dabohashi’ 『Study on the Modern Japanese-Korean Relations』 as a materials for Japan’s colonial rule of Korea. Besides, He was receives research expenses many times from government organization. Second, He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and worked in Gyeongseong Imperial University. So His Academic leanings can defined for a government- patronized scholar even if He studies focused on verifying historical facts. It was based on Imperial University’s characteristics. Modern History which was under the control of the national power, produced government- patronized scholars. Third, His 『Study on the Modern Japanese-Korean Relations』 was not general text but historical records. But his sorting standard was jug handled. He sorts historical records count toward Japanese. Therefore 『Study on the Modern Japanese-Korean Relations』 rationalize Japanese act of aggression or a policy of aggression. In conclusion, Dabohashi Giyoshi’ 『Study on the Modern Japanese- Korean Relations』 was representative text in Japanese Colonial Historiography. And Dabohashi’s scholarship was not Positivism history, it was ditortion history for his native country Japan.

다보하시 기요시(田保橋 潔, 1897~1945)는 20년 가까이 경성제대 교수로서, 또 조선사편수회의 촉탁으로서 식민사학의 중심에 서 있었다. 그리고 그의 『근대일선관계의 연구 近代日鮮關係の硏究』(上․下, 朝鮮總督府中樞院, 1940)는 이후 한국 근대사 연구에 지대한 영향을 미쳐왔다. 『근대일선관계의 연구』는 실증이라는 겉옷을 걸치고, 실제 식민사학의 확고한 정착과 근거의 제시, 그리고 그 역사적 검증의 작업을 통한 식민통치의 합리화라는 일제의 식민통치용 자료였다. 즉, 한국 근대사 입장에서는 ‘實 證이 아니라 失證’의 역사라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 지금까지 다보하시를 객관적이고 실증에 충실한 양심적 학자였다고 평가하는 대표적 사례로 자주 거론되는 것이 다보 하시의 박사학위논문 심사 탈락 건이다. 다보하시가 『근대일선관계의 연구』를 도쿄대학 박사학위논문으로 제출했는데, 그 내용 중 청일전쟁 관련부분에서 ‘일본 해군 의 도발에 의한 전쟁 발발’ 이라는 서술 때문에 학위를 받지 못했다는 것이다. 그러나 이 책을 저술할 당시 다보하시가 당초 박사학위 논문으로 저술한 것은 아니다. 이것 은 조선총독부의 식민지 통치의 정책 자료로서 비매품으로서 지원된 저술이었다. 때문에 통치자료로서 활용하기 위해서는 당연히 사실관계를 명확하게 규명해야했다. 따 라서 본질은 다보하시가 일본의 선제공격을 논증했다는 것에 있지 않다. 다보하시가 이 전쟁, 즉 청일전쟁의 성격을 어떻게 인식하고, 서술했는가가 다보하시의 동아시아 외교사 및 한국 근대사를 바라보는 역사관인 것이다. 그는 분명 동학농민운동을 청일전쟁의 원인인 ‘변란’으로, 그리고 청일전쟁을 제국주의의 침략전쟁이 아닌 청의 종 속국이었던 조선의 독립을 가능케 한 전쟁으로 일본이 희생을 감수한 전쟁으로 인식했다. 결론적으로 다보하시의 학문은 ‘실증’을 연구 방법론으로 하되 관변 사학 내지 어용 사학의 성격을 동시에 갖고 있었던 식민지 시기의 전형적인 강단사학이었다. 따라서 실증에 충실한 역사 연구라고 하여 그것이 반드시 객관적이고 과학적인 학문이 될 수 없음을 다보하시가 『근대일선관계의 연구』를 쓰면서 보여준 일본인의 입장에서 자신의 본국 일본의 제국주의 침략을 옹호하고, 합리화하기 위한 사료 선별의 주관성, 해석 관점, 결론 도출 과정에서 확인할 수 있다고 본다.
