Based on the earlier studies. the cognitive change variables that facilitate forgiveness could be divided into 5 factors: f1(ascent in social status), f2(solace by social comparison), f3(change in offender), f4(death or deterioration in health), and f5(striving for healing) in this study. The primary aim of this study was to confirm the 5-factor structure in forgiving process, and the secondary aim was to compare the relative levels in importance among the 5 cognitive change factors as a function of age. Participants were 419 men and 433 women who aged from 30 to 84 years. They were asked to assess how much each cognitive change factor affected their decisive acts of forgiving on 5-point scale [0 (not at all) to 4 (very much)] if they had to forgive someone. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a reasonable fit index for the 5-factor structure of the forgiveness-related questionnaire. Among the five factors, both f2 and f3 were found to be important, irrespective of the participants’ age, in their decisive acts of forgiving. The older the participants were, the more important the f1, f4 and f5 were come out in their decisive acts.

본 연구는 기존의 연구에서 5요인으로 분류된 용서과정에 영 향을 미치는 인지적 변화 유발 요인들의 타당성을 확인하고, 용서과 정에서의 요인과 연령에 따른 특성을 살펴본 것이었다. 연구대상자 는 30-84세의 남성 419명과 여성 433명이었으며, 그들에게 만약 대 인관계에서 상처를 받았다가 나중에 그 사람을 용서를 하게 될 경 우, 각 요인들이 용서과정의 인지적 변화 유발에 어느 정도 중요할 것인지를 5점 척도로 평가하도록 했다. 그 결과, 용서과정의 인지적 변화 유발 요인의 5요인 모형은 적합한 것으로 확인되었으며, 용서 과정의 인지적 변화 유발에 영향을 미치는 5요인들 중에서 f2(대조 로 인한 위로)와 f3(가해자의 변화)은 모든 연령대에서 같은 중요도 를 보이지만, f1(사회경제적 지위상승), f4(건강악화 및 죽음), 및 f5 (치유를 위한 노력)는 연령대가 증가할수록 중요도가 더 높아졌다. 30대나 40대에서는 용서과정의 인지적 변화에 f2와 f3이 중요한 요 인이었지만, 50대 이상에서는 f2와 f3뿐만 아니라 f1, f4, 및 f5도 용 서과정의 인지적 변화에 중요해짐을 알 수 있었다.
