The purposes of this study were to examine the current status of the play plan-play-evaluation activity during free play period and evaluate it on the basis teaching-learning principles. The participants were 701 teachers working in kindergartens and child care centers in various regions. Most of the teachers responded that this activity was needed and could be started at the age of four. They also held an orientation session in a large group, had the children plan on five specifics of their play, and had the children regularly evaluate their participation in their play on three or more issues. The teachers utilized the results of children’s evaluation to guide the play and thought this activity had positive effects on children’s learning. Theses tendencies were similar regardless of the children’s age and the educational settings. Practical implications and improvements for future research were suggested.

본 연구의 목적은 유치원과 어린이집에서 실시하고 있는 자유선택활동에서의 놀이 계획-실행-평가 활동의 현황을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 이 활동이 영유아의 학습과 성장에 기여할 수 있는 방안을 교수-학습방법 측면에서 모색하는데 있었다. 701명의 교사를 대상으로 설문조사를 한 결과 대부분의 교사는 이 활동이 필요하고 만 4세부터 시작할 수 있다고 응답하였다. 또한 교사는 대집단으로 오리엔테이션을 했고, 5가지 내용에 대해 영유아가 계획하도록 했고, 평가는 3가지 이상의 내용에 대해 정기적으로 하도록 했다. 교사는 평가 결과를 놀이를 지도하는데 가장 많이 활용하였고, 이 활동이 다양한 측면으로 효과가 있다고 생각하였다. 그러나 이런 경향은 연령과 기관 유형에 따라 크게 다르지 않았다. 이 활동의 실시 현황이 교사가 담당하는 연령이나 재직 하는 기관에 따라 크게 다르지 않다는 것은 이 활동을 학습자의 발달 특성이나 운영 시간 등의 기관 특성을 고려하지 않고 무분별하게 실행하고 있음을 암시한다. 이 활동의 교수-학습적 효과를 달성하기 위해 어떤 교수-학습적 측면의 개선이 필요한지와 추후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.
