An independent film won awards from Jeonju International Film Festival, EdinburghInternational Film Festival and Nantes Three Continents Festival. It also stands high in public and criticalestimations for its realistic incorporation of the director’s actual life without exaggeration, and its unaffectedacting. The director had to contemplate the film’s production system to convey the creative workenvironment for the synergy of the director and the actors. After due consideration, it was decided that thestaff should be managed minimally, utilizing the limited spaces and locations maximally. Furthermore, thescript was completed through long and considerable numbers of discussions with the actors, and their actinghad to be somewhere in between the characters and the actual selves in order to capture the reality;employing impromptu acting direction rather than insisting on a single consistent one. This essay describesthe film’s pre-production process putting the actors at the center, the process of repeated trial and error ofcasting, rehearsal and character-building, and ultimately how the actors’ realistic acting was drawn out andwhich acting methodology was chosen during filming.

독립영화 <잠 못 드는 밤>은 전주국제영화제, 낭트국제영화제, 에든버러국제영화제 등에서 수상했고 20여개국의 국제영화제에 초청된 작품이다. 또한 관객과 비평가들로부터 감독 자신의 삶을 과장 없이 사실적으로 담아냈으며 배우들의 자연스러운 연기가 돋보인다는 평가를 받았다. 감독은 배우와 창조적으로 작업할 수 있는 환경을 만들기 위한 제작시스템을 고민했다. 그래서 선택한 것이 소규모 스태프를 꾸리고 한정된 공간을 활용하는 것이었다. 또한 영화의 리얼리티를 위해 배우들과 오랜 시간 토론을 하며 대본을완성해나갔으며 배우들에게 그 자신과 극중의 캐릭터를 오가면서 연기하도록 했다. 특히 배우와의 작업에있어서 일관된 연기연출법을 이용했다기보다는 그 때 그 때의 상황에 맞는 방법을 동원했다. 본 연구는프리프로덕션 단계에서 배우 중심의 시스템을 준비했던 과정과 배우 캐스팅, 리허설, 캐릭터 구축의 과정과 시행착오를 기술하고, 그러한 준비를 통해 프로덕션에서 어떠한 방법론으로 배우의 사실적인 연기를이끌어낼 수 있었는지에 대한 소고이다.
