The Attitude and context used in South Korean films depicting North Korea has changed. Before, the North Koreans were perceived as "the others". However, films about the division of Korea with comedic elements began to be produced since the late 1990s. Such films make the audience laugh based on the "rigidity" explained in Henry Bergson’s Laughter. They generate laughter not by making a mockery of the North Koreans, but by making a mockery of the forbidden, rigid situation caused by the ideological difference. Moreover, instead of the usual happy ending, films about the division have an ironic mixture of comedy and tragedy, taking on a tragic subject matter with humorous depictions of daily life. As 60 years have passed since the Armistice, major consumers of the films about the division are not those who experienced the Korean War, nor their children's generation. The new generation who were born and raised in the divided South Korea takes a lighter approach to the reality. However, the transvaluation in comedy lets the audience encounter the actual message, leading to sadness, creating an irony, and ultimately inspiring the audience to rethink the division which became a part of their daily life.

남한에서 제작된 영화 속에서 북한을 묘사하는 태도나 북한 사람을 묘사 하는 내용상의 맥락에서 변화가 일어나고 있다. 이전까지 적화통일을 목적 으로 하는 타자의 이미지였던 북한 사람에 대해 1990년대 후반부터 휴머니 즘적 접근이 나타나기 시작했고 이후, 희극성과 결합한 영화들이 지속적으 로 제작되고 있다. 1990년대 이후 희극성과 결합한 분단 소재의 영화들은 코미디장르에서 나타나는 일반적인 컨벤션을 그대로 따르지 않는다. 먼저, 웃음생성요인에 있어서 아리스토텔레스의 ‘우월론’이 아닌, 앙리베르그송이 『웃음』에서 언 급한 ‘경직성’에 근거한다. 이는 이념이 다른 북한주민들을 조롱하기 위함이 아니라, 이념에 의해 금지되고 경직된 현실을 조롱하고 있다. 또한 분단소 재의 영화들은 일반적으로 희극에서 나타나는 해피엔딩의 서사구조를 따르 지 않는다. 비극적인 소재인 분단은 일상영역으로 흡수되면서 희극성과 결 합하게 되었기 때문에 희비극적인 결말에서 아이러니를 발생시킨다. 휴전 60년이 지난 지금 일상영역에 들어온 분단소재를 영화로 소비하는 주체는 분단을 실제로 경험한 세대와 그 자식세대가 아닌, 전쟁 비체험세대 가 주를 이루기 때문에 분단의 심각성과 비극성을 체감하는 정도가 다르다. 따라서 분단된 남한에서 태어나고 자란 비체험세대가 ‘분단’을 접근하기 위 해 보다 쉽고 가벼운 희극적인 양식을 통하고 있지만, 가치전복적인 코미디 를 통해 그 본질과 마주했을 때 느끼는 비극성은 아이러니를 일으키며, 일 상영역에 속한 분단상황에 대한 재고를 추동한다.
