The main purpose of this paper is to present a semio-phenomenological essay on the calligraphy which is an essence of East Asian culture. This study might be integrated in the framework of the humanities of writing which has been conducted several years ago. In particular in this perspective on the cultural history of media the calligraphy is to be considered as a key element. The author underlined the spirituality and abstract beauty of calligraphy in putting the positive elements and the long history of calligraphy into the parenthesis. This paper makes clear that the semiotic models should be problematic to be applied to the corporality of the calligraphic artist. In conclusion the author proposed another important theme of intermediality between the calligraphy and other visual arts in the cultural history of East Asia.

본 연구는 동양 문화의 정수라 할 수 있는 서예에 대한 기호 현상학적 시 론이다. 필자가 수 년 전부터 연구해 온 문자 인문학의 연장선상에서 동아 시아 매체 문화사의 핵심적 요소로서 서예를 주목하고 있다. 본고는 서예의 역사와 실증적 사실들을 괄호 속에 넣고 서예의 정신성과 추상적 미에 주 안점을 두었으며 특히 서양 기호학의 이론과 모델로서 포착될 수 없는 서 예의 비기호적 성격들을 언급하고 있다. 또한 본고는 서예의 신체성에 함의 된 고차원의 현상학에 방점을 찍고 있다. 이를테면 서예가의 손은 그의 정 신적 신체적 현존성을 설정하는 지시적 표시소를 작품의 중요한 요인들로 취한다는 점에서 구조 기호학의 개념에서 설명되기 어려운 양상들이 존재 한다. 끝으로 본고는 결론을 대신하여 서예와 다른 시각 예술과 조형예술과 의 상호 매체성을 차후의 연구 과제로 제시하고 있다.
