Fowler’s faith development theory has become popular and found strong acceptance in religious education, pastoral care, and developmental psychology. However, there are few studies on Fowler’s faith development theory studied in the context of the Korean Presbyterian Church. Biblical perspectives on faith development differ from Fowler’s theory and his theory has biblical and methodological weaknesses. This does not mean, however, that we Christians have nothing to gain from his faith development theory. This does mean that more of his theory must be reassessed on biblical grounds. Given the wide interest in Fowler’s theory, this study will evaluate the theory and to clarify the applicability of his faith development theory in Christian education and in the Christian ministry of the Korean Presbyterian Church. Additionally, this study will seek to provide the theory’s benefits and contributions for Christian education and church ministry. This study also provides several implications in the context of Christian ministry and the Korean Presbyterian church. Once we have refined Fowler’s theory by Christian doctrines, we will have a more useful tool for Christian education, and more benefits of Fowler’s theory can be employed in Christian ministry.

제임스 파울러의 (James Fowler) 신앙발달이론은 (Faith Development Theory) 여러 영역에서 연구되어 대중성을 지닌 이론일 뿐만 아니라, 종교교육, 목회 상담, 그리고 발 달심리학 분야 등에서 강한 지지를 받고 있다. 이처럼 그의 신앙발달이론은 이미 다양한 분야에서 널리 연구되는 분야이지만, 정작 한국교회의 상황 속에서 그의 이론이 조명 되 어진 연구들은 아직까지는 미미한 형편이다. 신앙발달에 관한 성경적인 관점과 파울러 의 신앙발달이론 사이에는 분명한 차이점들이 존재한다. 아울러 그의 이론은 성경적, 연 구방법론적인 약점들을 내재하고 있다. 그러나 이 점은 우리 기독교인들이 그의 신앙발 달이론으로부터 배우고 얻을 수 있는 것이 아무 것도 없다는 것을 전제하지 않는다. 오히려 그의 신앙발달이론의 좀 더 많은 부분들이 성경적인 배경 속에서 다시 한 번 재평가되 고재인식되어야함을함축한다. 이처럼 파울러의 신앙발달 이론에 관한 폭넓은 관심 속에서, 본 연구는 그의 이론을 간략 히 살펴봄과 동시에 그 이론을 재평가 하고자 하는 것이며, 기독교 교육과 한국장로교회 의 목회 사역들 안에서 파울러의 신앙발달 이론이 어떻게 적용 가능한지 그 적용 가능성 을 찾아보고자 한다. 더 나아가서, 이 연구는 기독교 교육 분야와 교회 사역들에 대한 그 의 이론이 지니고 있는 혜택들과 (장점들) 기여점들을 찾아보고자 한다. 그리하여 그 결 과로주어지는적용점들을제공하고자한다. 이미 언급한 것처럼, 파울러의 신앙발달 이론은 성경적인, 그리고 사회과학 방법론적인 면에서 몇 가지 취약점들을 드러내고 있는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 성경적인 관점에서 그의 이론 을 재조명해 본다면, 그의 신앙발달 이론은 효과적인 기독교 교육을 위한 중요한 도구가 될 것이 분명하고, 더 나아가서 그의 이론 속에 내재된 많은 장점들이 교회 사역 에다양하게적용될것이다.
