This study intends to examine the way how Japanese women-who appeared in the Japanese literature-coped with their own lives under the structure of polygamy and how differently the understanding of women appeared in each period-especially, to shed light on the periods from ancient times to medieval times as the center. "Kojiki" and "Nihonschottky" of the ancient times revealed the feelings of love and jealousy openly and showed a positive attitude toward it. Meanwhile, "Kageronitki" and "Shinsarugoki" of the ancient times shaped the anxiety of women-who lived relying on the men's love and attention under the polygamy; this can be interpreted that it was based on the women's perception that their lives could not be complete and their future could not be guaranteed through their husbands under the polygamy. In addition. in the medieval times, as the women's image-leading her homes and the world with her own abilities-emerged, the women's image -squarely confronting the men's one-sided freedom of sex-appeared. Such image was represented as a husband being thrown out of home in the medieval times' art-called Kyo︢gen. On the other hand, through the work called "Saiki" by Otokichoshi, independent women's image-breaking themselves the husband and wife relationship which was full of restriction and inequality and seeking the meaning of worthwhile life-was presented. In particular, the women featured in this work showed a step forward aspect-compared to the previous works-in that they were not hostile to each other-although under one men's wife and concubine relationship; rather, it showed the framework of men and women, and an institutional society and self-realization. By the study above, it can be said that women's attitude-coping with the polygamy - has been shown in the direction of steady progress; and the medieval literature showed such women's image most dynamically.

본고에서는 일본 문학에 등장하는 여성들이 일부다처제라는 사회구조 안에서 그들의 삶에 대처하는 방식을 살펴보고 이를 통해서 여성에 대한 이해가 각 시대별로 어떻게 달리 나타나는지를 특히 상대에서 중세까지를 중심으로 조명하고자 하였다. 상대 『古事記』, 『日本書紀』는 일부다처를 둘러싼 사랑과 질투의 감정을 솔직하게 드러내고 이를 긍정하였다. 한편 고대 『蜻蛉日記』와 『新猿楽記』에는 일부다처제하 남성의 사랑과 관심에 의지해서 살아가는 여성들의 불안이 형상화되었는데 여기에는 일부다처의 남편을 통해서 자신의 인생을 완성할 수도 없고 장래를 보장받을 수 없다는 절망감이 내재되어 있었다. 한편, 중세사회 자신의 실력으로 가정과 세상을 이끌어가는 여성상이 부상하면서 문학에서는 남성의 일방적 性의 자유에 저항하는 여성상이 등장한다. 교겐에서는 그것이 남편과 드잡이하는 아내와 쫓겨 가는 남편으로 형상화되었다. 또한 오토기조시(御伽草子) ｢사이키｣에는 가족이라는 속박과 불평등한 부부관계를 깨고 가치 있는 삶의 의미를 찾아 떠나는 독립적 여성상이 제시되었다. 특히 여성 주인공들이 처첩 관계 속에서도 서로를 적대시하지 않고 남성과 여성, 사회적 굴레와 자아실현이라는 구도 속에 동지적 결합을 보여주고 있다는 측면에서 앞선 작품들보다 진일보한 면모를 보여 주고 있다. 이상의 고찰에 의해 일부다처제에 대처하는 여성의 자세는 역사의 흐름과 함께 꾸준히 진보하는 방향으로 흘러왔으며 중세 문학은 그러한 여성상을 가장 다이내믹하게 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
