Under the assumption that the concept of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil,’ which has frequently been employed throughout the history of Korean novels, could be useful in understanding history from the aspect of style, this study aims to verify the effectiveness of the concept as well as to prove that the method of analysis of novels. To that end, the usage of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’ was thoroughly reviewed and decided it should only refer to a narrative model of "hardship of the good is happiness while gaining power of the bad is destruction." It means that the concept of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’ would be used only for the structural good and evil which exist in the deep-lying layer of stories. Also, in an effort to expose the aspects of such novels, many concepts were hired including ‘the ideology or value fundamental to the good and the bad,’ ‘the aspect of encouraging good,’ ‘the aspect of punishing evil,’ ‘the property of hardship,’ ‘the property of recovery,’ ‘the subject of punishing,’ and ‘the property of punishing.’This paper have selected the Korean New Novel as an object to reveal ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’, as a Method of Researching the modern novels.

권선징악은 과거에도 있었고 오늘날에도 쓰이고 있는 보편적 서사구조의 유형이다. 한국고소설에 는 권선징악을 지닌 작품들이 많았다. 그것은 당대에 주도적 이념이던 유교이념과 결합하여 특수한 양식을 이루었는데, 구성적 측면에서는 ‘선인의 수난→행복, 악인의 득세→패망’의 닫힌 구조로, 이 념적 측면에서는 ‘유교적 도덕의 승리와 인간적 욕망의 패배’ 구조로 나타났다. 고소설에 존재했던 권선징악 양식은 우리가 근대문학 초기라고 부르는 일정기간 동안 변모, 해체되 어 버린다. 사실 새로운 소설 개념과 양식이 들어왔다고 해서, 전통적 양식 자체가 해체될 필요는 없었다. 권선징악이 해체된 이유는 그 자체가 고소설의 일반적 소설형식으로 간주되어, ‘근대적 소 설을 위해 반드시 극복되어야 할’ 부정적 대상으로 여겨졌기 때문이다. 권선징악의 서사구조가 일부 변모되거나 해체된 유형은, 이런 맥락에서 한국소설의 양식적 변화를 밝히는 중요한 대상이 될 수 있다. 이를 의미 있게 논의할 수 있다면, 한국 근대소설은 새로운 양식 이 이입된 형태가 아니라, 전통적 양식과의 충돌, 대립, 타협 등의 ‘관계’ 속에서 형성되고 발전되었 다는 논리도 가능하다. 이 글에서는 신소설에 존재했던 이른바 ‘권선과정의 소멸유형’에 주목하여 한국소설의 양식적 변모 를 논의하고자 했다. 선인의 자살담과 희생담을 중심으로 권선과정의 소멸 유형이 지닌 의미를 고 찰하고, 주제소와 성격소 분석을 통해 작품의 의미를 읽어내는 논의도 아울러 수행하였다.
