본 논문은 漁村 沈彦光(1487~1540)의 󰡔國譯 漁村集󰡕을 대상으로 그가 지녔던 자연 인식의 태도 를 확인해보는 데 그 목표가 있다. 다만 분량 상, 그 연구 대상은 그의 시 중 빈번하게 사용된 동식 물로 그 범위를 국한시키도록 한다. 이를 바탕으로 시와 상징성과의 연관성은 물론, 그만이 독특하 게 해석해낸 자연물의 의미를 살펴봄으로써 그가 자연을 바라보았던 작가 의식의 일단에 접근해보 았다. 우선 심언광의 시 세계는 현실적이다. 농가에서 흔히 쓰는 농기구까지 세심하게 관찰하여 그 모양 과 재료까지 자세히 밝혔을 정도이다. 즉, 자연물의 관습적 상징성을 활용함은 물론, 藥材로 친숙한 덩굴식물에서 소박한 의복의 심상을 새롭게 도출해낼 만큼 늘 현실성을 추구했다. 또한 소나무 등의 자연물에서 확인되듯 마을이나 무덤 주변의 흔한 자연물을 시적 소재로 활용해 기존의 심상을 초월한 그리움의 공간으로 확장시키고 있다. 이를 통해 확보된 고향이라는 공간은 변방의 심상들과 맞물려 어촌의 우국애민적 가치관을 강조하고 있다. 따라서 심언광에게 자연은 삶 그 자체로 인식되었다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 어촌은 주변에서 흔히 접할 수 있고 이용할 수 있었던 친근한 자연물들에 새로운 의미를 부여하고자 노력함으로써 다른 시인들 이나 작품들과 차별화될 수 있는 生氣를 획득하고 있다. 아울러 그 저변에는 늘 우국애민을 전제로 삼아 진정한 목민관이 되고자 했던 어촌의 웅대한 포부가 담겨 있다. 그러므로 시를 통한 어촌의 자 연 인식 속에는 실제 생활이 가득 찬 세계, 서민의 고단한 삶을 적극 이해하고자 했던 지식인의 태 도가 무르녹아 있는 것이다.
