Spatially, the astral world can be largely divided into four areas: the celestial world (hermit world), afterworld, under world, and water world. However, if a space exhibits distinctive fantasy and is highly rooted in the astral world but also has attributes of both astral and real worlds, it is the ‘borderline space’. This article aims to analyze the characteristics of fantasy shown in biographic novels based on ‘borderline space’ and ‘boundariness’. ‘Borderline space’ is a type of spatial division used in both myths and old novels, especially the biographic novels. However, myths mostly use it as a means to strengthen divinity, and it can hardly be considered as a means to solidify fantasy. Both myths and old novels, too, surely accompany ontological or world view changes due to the transition of ‘borderline space’, but it is not used as a narrative method to strengthen fantasy. The come-and-go and communication between ‘borderline spaces’ are permitted to a special person or occur in a specific time. The main character comes and goes to the two worlds and experiences. At times, by the operation of supernatural power, the main character gets lost, and this happens before noticing within a specific psychological status. This often contrasts to their will or plan, so it may not repeat or end as a one-off thing. Because of this reason, by setting up a borderline space, it is intended to establish heterogeneous and incompatible spaces simultaneously. Boundariness is not given from the beginning but is provided by experiences in the astral world. And through this, readers come to realize that the spatial division was intended by the narrator from the start to create fantasy. What is to be focused on is that our form of thinking of such space should keep inside the concept of ‘boundariness’ and far more active and creative potentiality which the mechanism has. In conclusion, the borderline between the two worlds are obscure, and the narration of ‘borderline space’ solidifies fantasy.
