Leaving a huge mark on the history of studies in Korean philosophy, Hyunam Lee Eul Ho (1910∼1998), with his energetic academic activities from the 1960's to 80's, took the lead in clarifying the identity and essence of Korean Thought and philosophically defining these. Throughout the history of Korean Thought over which Chinese ways of thinking were widespread, he placed discovering things that were 'Korean' and 'independent' to lift our people's self-esteem and achieving mental and ideological independence in the first place all his life. Lee Eul Ho is a scholar who made a great contribution to exploring the uniqueness and identity of philosophy of the Korean people and establishing its legitimacy. His independent studies of the history of thought have important significance; his studies are rare and he described the History of Korean Thought and the History of Korean Philosophy based on our own thoughts, shifting from neo-confucianism of Zhu Xi and Sinocentrism, giving vitality and energy to them. What Lee Eul Ho sought to the last was the original form and essence of Korean Thought and writing about the proper history of the Korean Thought. His scholarly historical achievements ended in the establishment of the right history of Korean Thought. His persistent efforts to examine the identity of Korean Thought continued on throughout his life and there is no other scholar who can be compared to him. This writing shed light on Lee Eul Ho's studies and thoughts based on a 'sense of sovereignty' and the 'establishment of history of the Korean Thought' as the two main pillars.

한국철학 연구사에 큰 발자취를 남긴 현암 이을호(1910∼1998)는 1960∼80년대에 정열적으로 학술 활동을 하 면서, 한국사상의 정체와 본질을 밝히고 이를 철학적으로 정립하는 데 앞장섰다. 중국적 사유방식이 만연하였 던 한국사상사의 흐름 속에서 ‘한국적인 것’, ‘주체적인 것’을 발굴하여 우리 민족의 자존심을 높이고 정신적 사상적으로 독립하는 것을 평생 화두로 삼았다. 이을호는 한민족 철학의 고유성과 독자성을 탐구하고 그 정통성을 확립하는데 크게 기여한 학자이다. 그의 주 체적 사상사 연구는 이전에 보기 어려운 것으로서, 주자학과 중화사상(中華思想)에 찌든 한국사상사, 한국철 학사를 우리 고유사상을 중심으로 한 주체적인 것으로 바꾸어 서술함으로써 생기와 활력을 불어넣으려 했다 는 점에서 큰 의의를 부여할 수 있다. 이을호가 끝까지 추구했던 것은 한국사상의 원형이요 본질이었으며 제대로 된 한국사상사의 집필이었다. 이 을호의 학술사적 업적은 올바른 한국사상사의 정립으로 귀결된다. 한국사상의 정체성을 밝히려는 그의 고집 스런 노력은 평생에 걸쳐 일관된 것으로, 그에 비교될 만한 학자를 쉽게 찾기 어렵다. 이 글에서는 ‘주체의식’ 과 ‘한국사상사 정립’을 두 기둥으로 이을호의 학문과 사상을 조명하였다.
