The Moderating Effect of Self-Esteem and Narcissism to Relationships between Internalization of Socio-Cultural Norms toward Appearance and Appearance Dissatisfaction in Early Adolescence.

The major purpose of this study was to explore the moderating effects of adolescent's self-esteem and self-initiative narcissism on relationships between internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance and appearance dissatisfaction by gender. The subjects were a total of 516 students attending 5th and 6th grade student of elementary school and 1st and 2nd grade students of middle school. For data analysis, frequency, Cronbach α, Pearson's correlation coefficients, hierarchial regression were used. The main results were as follows: first, boys' and girls' adolescent’s internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance had positive correlation with the appearance dissatisfaction. Second, the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationships between boys' and girls' internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance and appearance dissatisfaction was significant. When the level of self-esteem is high, appearance dissatisfaction is low unrelated to the level of internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance. Third, the moderating effect of self-initiative narcissism on relationships between girls' internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance and appearance dissatisfaction was significant. Although the level of internalization of socio-cultural norms toward appearance is low, when girls' self-initiative narcissism is high appearance dissatisfaction are also high. Limitations are discussed.
