A Study on Affecting Factors on School Resilience of Adolescent from Multicultural Families

The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of demographic variables(sex, grade, parental educatiion, parental occupation, SES), self-esteem, communication, social support, acculturative stress on school resilience of adolescent from multicultural families. The subjects were 274(126 male, 148 female) adolescents from multicultural families in Jeonnam province. They completed Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, Communication skill scale, Student Social Support Scale, Acculturative Stress Scale and School Resilience scale. Statistical analyses of data were frequency, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, Stepwise regression analysis. Cronbach's alpha was computed for the reliability of the scales. SPSSWIN 20.0 was used for data analysis. The results were as follows: While adolescents’ sex and SES had no influences on school resilience of adolescents from multicultural families, Grade, paternal education and occupation had significant influences. Also it was found that self-esteem, teacher support, peer support, maternal occupation had significant influences on interests in school work, whereas communication, self-esteem and teacher support had significant influences on attitude toward academic achievement. Related to school rule conformity, teacher support, acculturative stress, communication, sex and community support were significant variables.
