According to John Dewey’s educational philosophy, art is an activity for individuals to understand themselves and engage in self-reflection through the process of expressing their lives and culture. This article reexamines art museum education that can enhance the cultural competence of all members of society. If museum education in the past existed to serve as a warehouse of knowledge for a certain group of elites, art museums in this age should provide their audience with various educational opportunities to experience openly and participate actively in culture and the arts. However, most education programs in Korean art museums mainly focus on art technique training, exhibition-related education using art historical information, or (fun) event programs appealing to populism. As an attempt to create a more meaningful art education program dedicated to the true meaning of “art” and “education,” this study presents a program that helps audience fulfill their aesthetic as well as cultural needs and enhances their cultural competence. Particularly paying attention to Soomukhwa, a Korean traditional painting genre, this program extracts valuable and effective educational elements. Soomukhwa serve as the quality materials in art museum education programs that can provide audience deep liberation through spiritual activities. Consequently, participants in the program may overcome various kinds of social problems stemming from today’s materialistic worldview, reason-oriented thinking, or modern conveniences.

미술관은 공공기관으로써 보다 많은 관람객에게 열린 경험을 제공하고 교육적인 기회를 부여할 수 있는 공간으로 존재해야한다. 그러나 국내의 미술관 교육은 일회성 혹은 대중주의를 겨냥한 행사성 프로그램으로 이루어지는 경우가 대부분이며, 진정한 교육적 의미에 집중한 프로그램은 거의 찾아보 기 힘들다. 본 연구는 이러한 미술관 교육의 현실을 비판적으로 인식하며, 존 듀이나 허버트 리드와 같은 교육철학자의 관점에서 미술관 교육이 지식전달과 기술전수 중심에서 벗어나 문화예술교육의 차원에서 이루어져야하는 필요성을 제기하였다. 그리고 관람객이 자신 혹은 자신을 둘러싼 상황과 환 경의 문제에 대해 좀 더 적극적으로 고민하며 삶의 질을 제고할 수 있도록 하는 방안으로 미술관 교 육프로그램을 제안하였다. 특히 전통한국화 그 중에서도 수묵화가 지닌 교육적 가능성에 주목하여, 급변하는 시대를 살아가고 있는 현대인들에게 의미 있는 미적 경험을 제공하는 동시에 일상의 삶과 연계되어 문화적 역량을 강화할 수 있는 교육프로그램의 방향을 모색하고자 했다.
