Most education history in early stage social affairs division has a risk to lose the practice records of the social affairs division teachers which are executed in local regions by the contents description focusing on metropolitan area. Therefore, the objective of this study is to be helpful to study the history of social affairs division education by systematically arranging the enthusiasm about new education of the early stage local social affairs division teachers and their records about the fulfillment of theeducation in social affairs division. Reason why Chonnam Social Affairs Education Research Association was selected as a researchsubject was that it is anassociation which gave big assistance in establishing Korea Social Affairs Education Research Association and also that the enthusiasm of early stageChonnam teachers was much higher than that in other regions. Research was conducted through the literature examination of research papers and reports in early stage Chonnam social affairs division research association and through the interviews with surviving early stage Chonnam social affairs division experts and major activists of the era. This study shows that the influences of the U.S. delegation were big in the establishment and transition procedures of early stage Chonnam social affairs division research association for a certain period of time and that Chonnam social affairs division research association which was established by the voluntary participation of the social affairs division experts in Chonnam regions gave substantial influences to Korean social affairs division until now.

초창기 사회과 교육연구사의 대부분은 수도권 중심의 내용 서술에 의해 자칫 지방에서 이루어지는 사회과교사들의 실천기록을 상실할 위험이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 초창기 지방 사회과교사들의 신교육에 대한 열망, 사회과교육의 실천에 대한 기록을 체계적으로 정리하여 사회과교육사를 연구하는데 조금이나마 도움이 되고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구대상으로 전남사회과교육연구학회를 선정한 이유는 한국사회과교육연구회의 창립에 큰 도움을 준 단체이고 초창기 전남교원들의 사회과 열망이 타 지방보다 높았기 때문이다. 연구 방법으로는 초창기 전남사회과연구학회의 연구회지, 연구보고서를 문헌탐구 하였고 생존해 있는 초창기 전남 사회과 전문가들과 시대별 주요 활동가들을 면담하였다. 이 연구에서는 일정기간 초창기 전남사회과교육연구학회의 성립과 변천에서 미국 교육사절단의 영향이 컸다는 것과 전남 지역의 사회과 전문가들의 자발적 참여로 이루어진 전남사회과교육연구학회가 지금까지 한국사회과에 적지 않은 영향을 끼치고 있다는 것을 밝히고 있다.
