This study examined the research trends of elementary multicultural education related studies per year, research subjects, research objects and research methods of theses carried in Korean Journal Articles registered in KCI and KCI candidate journals from 2000 to 2012. This study aims to provide basic data for future study of multicultural education based on this result. Following are the conclusion of this study. First, by the year, there were only 6 studies from 2000 to 2003; 36 pieces in 2008; 48 pieces in 2009; 61 pieces in 2010; 64 pieces in 2011 and 44 pieces in 2012. Number of theses for recent 5 years was 253 pieces, 91.0% of total number of theses. Second, by research subjects, among 11 research subjects, the number of study on ‘concept, direction, plan and theory’ of multicultural education was highest(76 pieces), followed by "recognition, attitude, efficiency(44 pieces), ‘curriculum and textbook development, analysis’(40 pieces), and ‘program and scale development, analysis’(37 pieces). Third, by research objects, the number of studies with ‘literature’ as objects was highest with 155 pieces, followed by ‘student’(75 pieces), ‘teacher’(54 pieces) and ‘parents’(14 pieces). Fourth, by research methods, the number of study using ‘literature research’ as research methods was highest with 155 pieces, followed by ‘quantitative research’(91 pieces), ‘qualitative research’ (23 pieces) and ‘integrated research’(9 pieces). As the developmental suggestion for such result, it is required for future elementary multicultural education study to identify diverse research subjects, research objects and methods and to continuously carry out studies that can be applied in the actual education site of elementary school since its needs has raised more and more with reflection of importance of current multicultural times.

본 연구에서는 2000년에서 2012년까지 국내 학술지인 KCI 등재지 및 등재후보지에 게재된 초등 다문화교육 관련 연구논문 278편을 연구대상으로 하여 연구의 연도별, 연구주제별, 연구대상별, 연구방법별에 대한 연구동향을 분석하였으며, 이 결과를 바탕으로 하여 향후 다문화교육의 연구 수행에 기초자료를 제공하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 그 구체적인 연구결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연도별로 보면, 2000년에서 2003년까지의 연구는 6편에 불과하며, 2008년 36편, 2009년 48편, 2010년 61편, 2011년, 64편, 2012년 44편으로서, 최근 5년간의 논문 편수는 전체 논문 편수의 91.0%인 253편이었다. 둘째, 연구주제별로 보면, 11개 연구주제 중 다문화교육의 ‘개념·방향·방안·이론’(76편)에 대한 연구가 가장 많이 수행되었으며, 그 다음으로 ‘인식·태도·효능감’(44편), ‘교육과정 및 교과서 개발·분석’(40편), ‘프로그램 및 척도 개발·분석’(37편) 등의 순으로 연구를 수행하였다. 셋째, 연구대상별로 보면, 네 가지 연구대상 중 ‘문헌’을 연구대상으로 한 연구가 155편으로 가장 많이 수행되었으며, 그 다음으로 ‘학생’(75편), ‘교사’(54편), ‘학부모’(14편) 등의 순으로 나타났다. 넷째, 연구방법별로 보면, 네 가지 연구방법 중 ‘문헌 연구’를 활용한 연구가 155편으로 가장 많았으며, 그 다음으로 ‘양적 연구’(91편), ‘질적 연구’ (23편), ‘통합 연구’(9편) 등의 순으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과에 대한 발전적인 제언으로, 초등 다문화교육 관련 연구는 현재 다문화시대의 중요성을 반영하는 것처럼 그 필요성이 점점 더 부각되고 있기 때문에, 향후 초등 다문화교육 관련 연구에서는 실제 초등학교 현장에 적용할 수 있는 연구들이 많이 수행되어져야 할 것이며, 연구주제의 범위를 넓힌다는 차원에서 중요 교과뿐만 아니라 실과 및 예체능 교과에 대한 초등학교의 교사교육, 교수-학습의 방법 및 모형 개발, 교육정책 및 법령 등의 연구를 지속적으로 수행해야 할 것이다.
